They should have also studied the effects of non violent games so they could could actually compare. We don't know if it was the violence that made the difference and video games have all kinds of effects on the mind.

"For the first time, we have found that a sample of randomly assigned young adults showed less activation in certain frontal brain regions following a week of playing violent video games at home," said Yang Wang, M.D., assistant research professor in the IU Department of Radiology and Imaging Sciences. "The affected brain regions are important for controlling emotion and aggressive behavior."

Yeah, let's think about this one. You play the game to have fun and eventually win (unless you're minecrafting). How do you win violent games? By being more violent than the other side. You learn the rules of the game and practice until you win. It's tapping into our ancient survival instinct that's been neutered the last hundred years or so. Humans have this crazy ability to adapt to their environment and adjust strategies.

If you play a violent game for a while, obviously you become less reactive about violence (in the video game). You get used to it. Both genders have this ability to adapt. I'm watching a show about a serial killer and my girlfriend is already getting nervous if the guy gets caught. I'm like, "you're cheering on a serial killer you know." She doesn't flinch at him stabbing his victims anymore. Neither do I for that matter (I did the first couple). Depending on the victim, she downright smiles when he stabs them.

"These findings indicate that violent video game play has a long-term effect on brain functioning," Dr. Wang said. "These effects may translate into behavioral changes over longer periods of game play."

Bullshit. No evidence cited to even point to this conclusion.

Depends upon the funding. If you are a lower level researcher it can be a pain to fund enough subjects, so instead you go cheaper. It is easier to get guys who are into videogames so you focus on that. BUT... any good scientist will note that they had to make such a choice in his dicussion/conclusion and will mention that an equal study for women, or to be more exact a completely new study for men and women that test them in the same way will be needed to draw results.
