The study is flawed. The resume associated them with an organization that fundamentally attached itself to expressed human sexuality. Employers who oppose open sexuality, regardless of orientation, would be lumped in with those who only oppose open homosexuality.

Maybe they'd reason that a sexually "liberated" person would be too open, making others uncomfortable in conversation. A person with that sort of reasoning wouldn't want to hire a volunteer "gay rights" organization manager, but they wouldn't want to hire a volunteer manager for the "Polyamory Advocacy Association" either.

The study needs an expressed heterosexual parallel in order to balance it out. Right now they're not making any distinction between people who are discriminating based on orientation and those who are discriminating based on non-orientation related sexual conservatism.

In hindsight, it seems somewhat obvious considering the South is the most religious area of the country and generally pretty backwards. The Midwest is more of a mixed bag, but still pretty religious and generally seen as a bastion of deep-rooted, traditional "American" culture; it is, for example, the area in the US where circumcision is the most common.

What I do wonder though, is what the numbers would have been for lesbians. Popular wisdom says that gay men are generally thought of more negatively than their female counterparts.
