It could be said that every parent does it for a different reason. As does every doctor.

Your insistence to divide this issue along gender lines says more about you than it does about genital mutilation.

I stand with Soraya Miré, a victim of female genital mutilation, who said,

This act of female genital mutilation or male cutting or male genital mutilation—whether it's a culture and religious or personal choice—I think is nothing but a scar of betrayal; it really is a sore wound; the minute you touch that child—the minute you cut at that child— the pain and betrayal is always there in the cut person's head; whether that person chooses to speak for or against it, it's there.

I remember from back in 1993, sitting in Marilyn Milos's living room, watching that video of that young baby boy undergoing the genital mutilation—what struck me the most was this painful cry as his wrists and legs were tied down to the surgical table: I saw myself in him—as my own mother stood above my head, eyes watching, the doctor's rough finger dancing around my private parts, touching a place he had no business touching. No Business Touching.

You'll notice something else different between Soraya and yourself: You view circumcision primarily from the perspective of the perpetrator, the one doing the cutting.

Soraya and I view circumcision more from the perspective of the recipient, and the consequences it has in our lives.

Which is more important?

There are lots of people like you who believe it doesn't matter what the consequences of your actions are, as long as you have the right thought in your head.... as you carve into someone's flesh, as they scream in terror an agony.... you're concerned that the perpetrator keep telling themselves, "it's for cleanliness... it's for STD prevention... it's for reason XYZ that I carve off your sexuality."

"... and for reasons I dare not admit publicly or even to myself, I want to carve off your sexuality."

You're making a lot of assumptions concerning what I believe. I'm not convinced that the two practices are equal. I don't think that a victim of FGM should be taken as an authority on circumcision. She related a personal event with one she witnessed and made an emotional connection between the two.

I'm a circumcised man and I resent the implication that either my parents/doctor wanted or actually did "carve off my sexuality." It is simply not the case in my situation, nor the vast majority of western cases.

If I had a choice I would have not been circumcised. however, I believe your rhetoric, particularly the implication that parents who circumcise secretly harbor twisted sexually motivated reasons, is not only reflective of your twisted beliefs but damages and corrupts our goals of ending routine male circumcision.
