Even in 2013 I guess men are obligated to put themselves in danger to protect women. Tell me...what are women obligated to do for men in this modern age?

high importance vs. low importance?

[–]Kuonji[S] 1 point2 points3 points 15 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

Winner winner

When they say "importance" it has nothing to do with endorsement/etc. of the message. They're not saying that women's rights are more important than men's rights. The WRM has had a much bigger historical impact than the MRM...so to a site like wikipedia, that makes it more "important".

Once the MRM has done more, the importance of the MR wikipedia page will rise.

Are you sure you aren't talking about article 'quality'? Because I was pointing out article 'importance'.

[–]CoonTown0 points 15 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Ah, I see. The link showed both importance and quality, so I thought they were one in the same.

[–]mauibuakawi 1 point2 points3 points 15 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

I kind of agree with the relative importance. While I might consider the MRM movement in the US to be on par with the WRM, worldwide, Women's rights is a far more important issue.

I'm not saying that men in the world do not suffer from gender discrimination, just that they suffer less.

And you're an authority who based their decision on unbiased, fact-based evidence and who has gone to great lengths to work through their personal biases.

Thanks for your insight.

ps: you're lying to yourself.

Women living in unstable African nations will likely be raped sometime in their life. Young girls in China are frequently abandoned, if not aborted. If you've ever been to Central/South America, then you'll know how sexually objectified women living there are. Have you seen the photo of the young Pakistani girl who's nose was cut off by the Taliban? I'm too lazy to look up references for these references, as I feel they are well known.

If you can show me how men the world around are being screwed over systematically, I'd love to hear it. I'm an MRA and I firmly believe that Men, especially in long industrialized western societies like the US and Europe, suffer from gender discrimination with little/no sympathy in society.

My opinion, which I never claimed as factually provable, is that the aggregate suffering of women around the world, is greater than men's.

Also, questions are usually punctuated with a "?".

They are, and it's curious how you seem so selectively blind or uninformed about it.

Looking just at child soldiers, which is roughly the counterpart of the African rape issue you mentioned (since it's often the soldiers doing the raping):

http://abandoned-orphaned.typepad.com/paulmyhill/2007/09/a-child-soldier.html

With guns pointed at his head, a child might have to kill his own father and mother with a hoe or machete, often with daddy and mommy telling him that it is ok so that their boy might live, might have a chance to escape and lead a normal life. As such, many children are the very instruments used to cause their own orphaning.

Regardless of who they are forced to murder, the children start to think of themselves as evil, damned beings...unforgiveable, unredeemable. In that state, they can be further exploited to do diabolical acts of violence and hatred.

IE: instead of being used as occasional sex objects, men are used for long-term labor or fighting objects, enslaved in both body and mind.

Take your sexist white knighting elsewhere.

Good point on Africa. I had almost forgotten about the Lost boys of Somalia.

Point of clarification: are you saying that men worldwide have it as bad or worse than women worldwide?

[–]theozoph 0 points1 point2 points 15 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Women living in unstable African nations will likely be raped sometime in their life.

There have been a number of important posts about man rape in African countries in the last week, I urge you to research them. Basically, man rape is also an epidemic in war-torn countries, but men have no access to NGOs dealing with rape, because it would detract from efforts to help women.

Some victims are living in constant pain and no surgery is available, their families and friends abandon them, and they can get no succor from their government or NGOs.

Once again, men are held to be disposable, and their lesser value confirmed through discrimination.

My opinion, which I never claimed as factually supported opinion, is that the aggregate suffering of women around the world, is greater than men's.

No, I think what goes on here is that you don't feel that men's suffering is important. I'm not attacking you, but it is a very common sentiment, reinforced by a lifetime of seeing male deaths glossed over, men's pain dismissed, and men's issues poo-pooed by a culture that assigns men no intrinsic value, like it does for women.

Perhaps you'll be able to remove these cultural blinders, perhaps not. Suffering is the one common human experience, but its value varies according to sex. Even a cursory look at news or action films will impress that fact upon you.

Peace.

This kind of undermines the complaint that Wikipedia is sexist against women because of the higher proportion of submissions by men, one would say?

[–]Iankap 0 points1 point2 points 15 years ago* (3 children) | Copy Link

Wikipedia does this to document the historical importance of something to something else.

To be honest, The Women's rights movement has had more to do with human rights than the wen's rights movement.

If only to say that voting is a more important issue than alimony.

[–]kanuk876[🍰] 2 points3 points4 points 15 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Yeah. Because having my sexual organs violently hacked off at birth is of no consequence compared to any female suffering.

Torture? Violent bloody sexual oppression? Forced body mutilation? Happens to a male? No problem. Right? Totally not a human right issue?

Gotcha.

[–]Iankap 0 points1 point2 points 15 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

No it's just that wikipedia ranks things so that they know what to cover better.

The women's suffrage movement is well documented and needs an important article to document it for a more comprehensive coverage of women's rights.

Alimony is a human rights issue, but not as important.

[–]kanuk876[🍰] 2 points3 points4 points 15 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I've got a different interpretation. I think wikipedia illustrates the fact that victors write the history books.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 15 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Nah--why would you even bother discussing men's rights in a men's rights talk page???

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 15 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Nope. Care to enlighten us?

[–]CoonTown1 point 15 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Not really, other than the additional box reminding users that the talk page is not a forum for discussion of Men's Rights. The Women's Rights page has the same reminder in the top left though.

Am I missing something?
