Even when you "fixed" it, it still makes you sound like an asshole.

Remember that guy in Florida who passed a toddler walking along the side of the road, with no houses or other adults anywhere near, and decided not to intervene? I'm sure he was apprehensive about being falsely accused of something horrible. I sympathize with that. But when they found the child drowned in a ditch the next day, I bet he very much wished that he made a different choice.

That's an extreme circumstance, of course. Typically, there's a way to help a lost/hurt child that doesn't involve being alone with them for a single second. If you're so risk-averse that you can't yell for help in a populated area, then yeah, you're an asshole.

Pro tip: If you encounter a lost child in a store, as the rage-comic guy did, ask a woman passing by to take charge of the situation. She will. I have personally done this two or three times. It may suck that you have to delegate like this, but adults ignoring lost children sucks more.
