congratulations?

Congratulate her, wish her the best, and keep your nose the hell out of it. This would be like someone on the other side hearing your wife's pregnant and trying to persuade you to get the lad circumcised, it's simply rude.

Basically, what you'd be saying is "I don't believe you're smart, mature, or rational enough to have made a thoughtful decision about this". If you don't respect her, why should she listen to you? If you do respect her, why do you need to try to persuade her?

Tell her give the mohel a good tip.

Seriously tho, this is a hard one. The child is theirs. While I feel circumcision (or any other body part removal) for non-medical reasons should be outlawed, currently it is legal. As such, it's their kid to screw up in any manner they see fit ;)

I guess, if it is a boy, ask them if they are going to circumcise their daughter if they have a girl next. Just leave it at that and let them make up their own mind.

My parents did this to me and frankly it isn't a big deal to me - not at all. I seriously don't care.

Wait so you're saying if I don't want keep my left hand, you don't think I should be able to have it removed by someone qualified to remove it? That can't have any negative repercussions. And where do you draw the line? Should I be able to get my ears pierced (which only removes part of the ear)? What about clipping my toe nails or cutting my hair?

[–]Demonspawn 5 points6 points7 points 15 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

As an adult, go ahead. I guess I should have been more specific: removing any part of said child's body by parental decree.

What about clipping my toe nails or cutting my hair?

That's reasonable human maintenance. Feel free to tell yer kid to get a haircut.

Should I be able to get my [kids] ears pierced?

That's honestly questionable. I'd have to spend some time thinking on that one.

[–]BolshevikMuppet 0 points1 point2 points 15 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

To give Skeptically the benefit of the doubt, perhaps what he's saying that even parents who want to have their children circumcised should have it done by a doctor in a hospital, rather than a Mohel in a Synagogue.

[–]SkepticallySkeptical -2 points-1 points0 points 15 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

That's completely different. I agree that the removal (or permanent altering) of a child's body part should be illegal unless the child consents. At what age a child should be able to legally consent to something like that, I don't know.

[–]disposable_human 2 points3 points4 points 15 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

A child under the legal age of consent cannot consent (that's what it means to be so). They can only assent. In medical ethics, you need both if the child is able to express themselves.

TIL, thanks.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 15 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

So children born with cleft palate should have to wait until they are 18 to have it fixed?

[–]SkepticallySkeptical -2 points-1 points0 points 15 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Holy shit, people. Finish reading what I type before you say something.

At what age a child should be able to legally consent to something like that, I don't know.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 15 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

My point was less about the specific age, and more about pointing out that this argument isn't about "being able to consent to permanent alterations of [the child's] body", but rather personal feelings about circumcision.

If your child was born with a large, hairy mole on their face, would you want them to wait until they were "old enough to decide on their own" to remove it?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 15 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

You can do whatever you want to yourself. You can't have an infant's left hand removed.

[–]SkepticallySkeptical 0 points1 point2 points 15 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I think you should reread what I said.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 15 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I think you should reread what you wrote.

[–]SkepticallySkeptical 0 points1 point2 points 15 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I did. No where did I advocate the removal of other people's hands. Now if you'd like to explain how nom-nom-nom came to that conclusion, I would be glad to listen.

[–]pcarvious -2 points-1 points0 points 15 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Your cousin has the right to follow their religious preferences. That said, a lot of what is wrong with circumcision is that the child isn't given a choice. I don't know what to tell you here other than to support the child. If it's a boy it's going to face a hell of a lot more than a circumcision by the time the various systems in the US are through with it.

[–]Ortus -1 points0 points1 point 15 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Well if educating christian, and even non religious parents about this is hard enough...

[–]jelliedbabies -1 points0 points1 point 15 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It's going to be harder to convince someone who does it for religious reasons than it is to convince someone who does it for no reason at all. I don't think anythings going to effect their choice. Even FGM is still carried out for cultural reason while illegal the world over. You just don't win these ones.

Jewish? At least he gets to wait until he's a young adult to get circumcized

[–]DownSoFar 4 points5 points6 points 15 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

You're confused. Jewish boys get circumcised at 8 days old.

[–]AnnArchist -4 points-3 points-2 points 15 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

then what the hell do they do around age 13

[–]DownSoFar 2 points3 points4 points 15 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

The Bar Mitzvah signifies the change from boy to man in the Jewish community. The thirteen year old usually reads from the Torah, and sometimes leads a discussion of the passage read.

A celebration usually follows.

I always figured that was when they did the chopping. I'm not a jew so i never really learned about it. my bad,

[–]Maschalismos 0 points1 point2 points 15 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

What you are thinking of is a Barmitzvah. At 13, a boy demonstrates his ability to read the torah, understand the nuances of jewish law, and is therefore accepted as an adult. much partying then ensues. no penis-modification is involved.

[–]flip69 -3 points-2 points-1 points 15 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I would address her concept of religion first and foremost. If possible swing her to atheism the religious and cultural ethnic traditions will then fall in short order.

Frankly this all may be too late. If she believes the myths and traditions or that the concept of "blood purity" is strong in her she'll most likely follow the tradition of mutilating the child according to the written directives.

[–]kloo2yoo -3 points-2 points-1 points 15 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

wait until someone else mentions the bris, then chuckle aloud with a bit about how a male, all-knowing god made everything perfect, except the definitely "male" part of the infant child. "let yourself" be pushed into stating your opinions on circumcision.
