So, we want the same money because we're women. But we don't want to do the same work. Because we are women. But only a sexist pig would point out that absurdity, of course.

  1. More likely to share common interests

This one... just seems really odd to me. The other ones I can kinda nod and go "yeah, I can see that", but this one? What the heck? BOTH men and women have more in common with male bosses than female bosses? I'm not sure how that one even makes sense. It's either a non-gender related basis, OR female employees would expectedly have more in common with female bosses.

[–]kog13 13 points14 points15 points 15 years ago (25 children) | Copy Link

I'm going to make the "this is generalization" comment, which is true; some women make great bosses. I do believe that since girls are taught to think with their heart to a much greater extent than boys, it's difficult to transfer to a situation where others would prefer that you didn't; hence the discrepancy.

IMO, the other side of this is that very little emphasis is put on leadership for girls. I went through Boy Scouts and have talked to several girls I know that went through Girl Scouts, and the almost universal purpose of Girl Scouts is simply to make friends. Boy Scouts, while making friends is a perk, focuses much more on achievements; merit badges, ranks, and designated leadership positions. My troop especially focused exclusively on the idea of a boy-led troop (adult leaders simply sat back and watched); I don't know any girls who've done anything similar.

As an ex-Scout, who was in Girl Scouts for ten years, it really depends on your troop, your leader, and your personal drive. It's really easy, if you want it, to be a junior counselour at camps, to help out in younger troops, etc. But a lot of Girl Scouting has gone down the tubes, to the point where at camping events, multiple troops would order in pizza rather than cook something. But the Boy Scouts in our area kind of sucked as well.

Your base point is correct though. It's an example of gender privilege, much as I hate that phrase, that boys and men are far more encouraged to be leaders. If girls are only half-heartedly offered that kind of education, of course they aren't going to be as good at it.

We hear so often that "woman are better than man concerning x". Why can't man be simply better than woman in some things?

For example, they claim women are emotionally superior. Which they are not, it is not that simple.

I understand what you're getting at, but try not to contradict yourself.

Also, I'm hesitant to turn to biology for behavioral explanations when there are a lot of nuture aspects that need to be examined first. Regardless of what our biology tells us, if we keep teaching girls one thing and boys another, there will be a discrepancy in everybody's opinions. The answer about why we teach boys this and girls that may be traced back to biology, but you'd be surprised at how much people can adapt if they change the environment in which they live.

[–]kog13 1 point2 points3 points 15 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

What I'm saying is that you can only blame biology to an extent. I personally don't believe that women being moodier is biological. Everyone gets hormonal mood swings; women just have a physical effect attached to prove it, and are taught to express themselves. When men have mood swings, it generally gets quietly suppressed.

On the other hand, if you can muster enough evidence that men making better bosses is a biological trait, I wish you the best of luck arguing that in the political circuit. Regardless of how true it is, making the argument will win you far more enemies than friends.

[–]onlyAA 1 point2 points3 points 15 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Eh, you don't know very much about Girl Scouts--did those girls stay in it past 4th grade? I stayed in it to the highest level--and I have my "Senior Leadership Pin" to prove it ;).

[–]kog13 3 points4 points5 points 15 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

My sister actually quit pretty early because she was jealous of all the camping that my troop did, while her troop just did crafts. I actually felt sorry for her, camping is way better.

[–]onlyAA 1 point2 points3 points 15 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Aw. I did a lot more than crafts. We did a lot of outdoors stuff, including camping. I guess it is highly dependent on who the leaders of the troop are, seeing as it's a volunteer thing and they get to choose which badges and activities to focus on. I also grew up in AK, where I guess it might be more normal/accepted for little girls to be into rugged, outdoor things.

[–]theozoph 1 point2 points3 points 15 years ago (16 children) | Copy Link

Well, this is also because women are wired for cooperation, and men for competition (basic evo-psych). While this varies among individuals and can be somewhat offset by cultural training, it's always going to be a factor. If you make boys do girls things they are bored, and vice-versa. Even chimps show these behaviors (I know, citation needed, but who has the time? Google it).

Your boy/girl scouts leaders knew what they were doing. They would just need to adjust it along time, for example by introducing more team competition (girls learn competition, boys learn cooperation).

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points8 points 15 years ago (15 children) | Copy Link

Yes, because competing to kill an animal works so much better than cooperating to kill an animal! "Basic evo-psych" my ass. You're full of shit, and that shit is called "using pop science to justify my opinions."

[–]theozoph 0 points1 point2 points 15 years ago (9 children) | Copy Link

As usual, you're being stupid.

Cooperation at a camp, making friends and allies (the usual for women) is very different than cooperation during a hunt. Once back, men are still jockeying for status as the best hunter, the best chief, the most powerful individual in the tribe. Once you got back to our primate roots, it is even more of the same to gather the most females, all the line down to our first sexual ancestors. Millions of years of competing for females.

You just haven't read anything about evo-psych, but you think it is "pop science". Looks like you're the one who's full of shit. I can even tell you where : it's between your ears.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points5 points 15 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link

You just haven't read anything about evo-psych

Yes, I have - and guess what ? Its about 100% speculation, sometimes supported speculation, but if you think its a "hard science" you're a fool.

Yea, except our closest relatives, Bonobos, are matriarchal and practice an incredible amount of "free love"

Once back, men are still jockeying for status as the best hunter, the best chief, the most powerful individual in the tribe.

You've never, ever played team sports. Ever. You've also never studied hunter/gatherer tribes, their hunting habits and hierarchical organization. You should start with the San people, as they're the closest to what our most ancient ancestors were like.

There is nothing about evolution that can be construed as "hard science", because we're still guessing at its mechanisms, for the most part. Doesn't mean it's bunk, except if you like your Bible a little too much.

Yea, except our closest relatives, Bonobos, are matriarchal and practice an incredible amount of "free love"

The bonobos are very far from us in terms of behavior. If you want a closer look, go no further than the chimpanzees, our other close cousins. Murder, band warfare, adultery, rape, incest, cannibalism, hunting for meat (often monkeys), it's all there. Only pot-smoking hippies think we're supposed to be bonobos. We're chimps all the way.

You've never, ever played team sports. Ever. You've also never studied hunter/gatherer tribes, their hunting habits and hierarchical organization. You should start with the San people, as they're the closest to what our most ancient ancestors were like.

You've never, ever played team sports. Ever. You've also never studied hunter/gatherer tribes, their hunting habits and hierarchical organization.

I used to play rugby, and have read more anthropology books than I care to count, so you're wrong on both counts. Of course I know about the San, we have pictographs indicating that their culture might be literally thousands of years old, and definitely predates the Bantu expansion (here, have I sufficiently proven my credentials?).

That doesn't mean much, though. Cultures adapt to their environment, and people living in harsh conditions are rarely very aggressive, for obvious reasons. Anyway, the San have been pushed to desertic areas, so we can't even be sure that their modern-day culture is anything like what they were like 6000 years ago.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 15 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

The bonobos are very far from us in terms of behavior.

Not at all. Their use of sexuality as a form of social lubrication is very close to humans. Not to mention they're evolutionarily closer to us.

I take you're from the hippie side of the family, then. I guess it's my turn to say [citation needed].

Wait.

They live south of the river, and thereby were separated from the ancestors of the Common Chimpanzee.

Yet,

Additional findings from the same study reveal that bonobos are the closest relatives to homo sapiens, moreso than the common chimpanzee.

So basically, a species that diverged from the common chimpanzee, is closer to us than the common chimpanzee. How does that even begin to make sense? Did we?... Naaahhh...

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points1 point 15 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

with spears and rocks and shit, killing animals is easy work. the competition comes into play when males compete to the right to hunt the prey

in hunting large mammoths, men cooperate first then compete for the biggest share of the kill.

I was talking to one of my female friends yesterday about a roommate situation. They had all agreed (3 girls) on a set price for the master bedroom and all 3 were okay with getting the masters. they drew sticks to decide who would get first pick, etc etc (females, smh). Girl 1 and 2 decided to take the small rooms, and Girl 3 was left with the master bedroom. A week or two later she starts to bitch about how the master bedroom costs too much and demands that the rate be lowered.

As everythign was already agreed upon, i saw no dilema at all. I told her to just tell the roommate, we all agreed already, take it or leave it, we'll find someone else to take the master.

Throw in the fact that girl 3 DEMANDED, not ASK about flexibility, I really saw no reason why the girls should cooperate with her request at all. They even tried to do -$20/month instead of girl 3's request of -$30/month and girl 3 just flatout refused.

I thought she was making problems for herself over something that is easily solved, but her cooperation instincts are fucking everything over.

I don't know how any of that is related or makes sense, i'm pulling shit out of my ass.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points5 points 15 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

with spears and rocks and shit, killing animals is easy work.

yea no.

Hunting mammoths took the whole tribe (echoes can be seen in the North American indian's buffalo hunts), often driving the animals over a cliff and then cooperatively sharing all the meat.

Humans are cooperative not competitive. Only our cooperation has allowed our species to do as well as it has. Everything you've ever done in your life is the result of collective effort.

[–]kragshot 1 point2 points3 points 15 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Beating out the other guy who wanted to date your girlfriend/wife is cooperation?

Just asking.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 15 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yea, thats not how it works - especially in a hunter/gatherer society.

[–]theozoph 1 point2 points3 points 15 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It's not either/or. Boys compete, becomes adult, still compete within an acceptable social framework (from bungee-jumping, to stick fighting, to joust), and cooperate with tribe, nation, gang, friends to beat other tribe, nation, gang, band of friends.

It's not even necessarily violent. Sports, races, artistic talent, economical success, social status, humans (and especially men) love challenges and jockeying for position. Denying the competitive aspect of human nature is insane.

Sure, as social animals, we're also cooperative, but within that framework, you have to admit that competition is the manly thing and making friends the effeminate. Studies confirm this.

What does this have to do with Men's Rights? This subreddit it rapidly degrading into a chauvanistic, sexist, woman hating, and sometimes racist lodge.

[–]theozoph 14 points15 points16 points 15 years ago* (3 children) | Copy Link

Agreed. This has nothing to do with Men's Rights. Looks more like a bragging contest we shouldn't get involved in.

I disagree with your characterization, though, WabashSon. This is the only overtly sexist title on Men's Right frontpage. It happens. Just downmod it.

[–]WabashSon 4 points5 points6 points 15 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Thanks.. but it's the only one today.

[–]kog13 1 point2 points3 points 15 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I think it's backlash from the argument that women would be better rulers than men, which is surprisingly prevalent.

[–]theozoph 3 points4 points5 points 15 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Possible, personally I think women are just as rotten as men, with differences mainly in the "how". Some women made great rulers (Catherine the Great, for one), others were awful (Thatcher). It's all a crap shoot, but for some reason we think that women will manage to pull us off the path to self-extinction...

I laugh at such naiveté with a hearty enthusiasm... :)

[–]ignatiusloyola 0 points1 point2 points 15 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The problem is the posters, not the commenters. Many active posters are posting things others find offensive. Now, many of these are downvoted fairly heavily (like this one), which suggests that they aren't representative of the whole.

The more reasoned people tend to comment more than post new articles, so it just seems to be this way. Please find more content to post so that this doesn't happen!

[–]etherspirit 0 points1 point2 points 15 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

I like how when men are purported to be better than women at something, it's chauvinistic, sexist, and woman hating.

[–]WabashSon 0 points1 point2 points 15 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

no, it's when you have to brag about it by posting it on a website to remind everyone how superior men are to women that it's chauvinistic...

[–]etherspirit 0 points1 point2 points 15 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Right, and when its posted on websites that women are better about something than men, it's not chauvinistic, it's popular. That's a double standard that I do not agree with.

[–]WabashSon 0 points1 point2 points 15 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

see what you did there. That's not what I said at all. But two wrongs dont make a right. To contradict women's bragging we brag? WTF?

[–]etherspirit 0 points1 point2 points 15 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Well, for me, a little bragging (for both men and women) isn't a bad thing, but for others it is. So either accept bragging for both sides, or don't accept it for either. However, accepting it for one and not accepting it for the other is a double standard.

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points1 point 15 years ago* (2 children) | Copy Link

Gee I don't know, when feminists lie that women are discriminated against in leadership roles - they just aren't as good at them - and Sweden and other European countries either have or are considering enforcing 40% representation by women in executive positions, I think this subject is highly relevant.

Idiot.

[–]dcousineau 4 points5 points6 points 15 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

If this study said anything about the actual effect of gender on leadership, sure, you'd have a point.

But everything about this study is how the workers "view" their bosses.

No comparison of profits, no comparison of actual happiness, no visible attempt to avoid bias (were some of the people giving female bosses giving negative reviews because their most recent negative experience was with a female boss?).

Nothing but a poll that tells us that people hold the same gender-stereotyped views they have since time immemorial. The same views that keep biting us in the ass (the same people who assume that men make better leaders tend to be the same people that assume that women make better mothers).

So the subject is highly relevant, this article is not.

[–]WabashSon 0 points1 point2 points 15 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

So you think women aren't discriminated against at all in the workplace? These are all just lies perpetrated by evil feminist nazis who are out to destroy men ... for what?

[–]kloo2yoo -2 points-1 points0 points 15 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

/r/MensRights - winning the disapproval of feminists for two years!

[–]enso13 3 points4 points5 points 15 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

If someone isn't anti-woman, it makes them a feminist?

[–]WabashSon -1 points0 points1 point 15 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

RIGHT!!? Typical immature illogical sentiment. You either hate women or men. Pick a side.

[–]kloo2yoo -1 points0 points1 point 15 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

that depends. if someone wants to prove how popular feminism is, the most widely encompassing description, even one including men, is favorable. If a feminist says something embarrassing, she's not truly preaching feminism.

[–]enso13 0 points1 point2 points 15 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I doubt that's the type of feminist you were referring to in your original comment.

[–]kloo2yoo 2 points3 points4 points 15 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

since the first week this subreddit was started, we were getting drive-by attacks accusing us of being stupid misogynists. that's what I was referring to.

[–]FishKiss -2 points-1 points0 points 15 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

I think it's relevant because it contrasts these people's real-world experiences of women in managerial roles against the claims often seen in the mainstream press about women having a host of positive traits that make them better leaders.

It is commonplace and acceptable in mainstream society for negative traits to be attributed to men and positive ones to women when comparing the sexes--yet doing the opposite invokes a very emotionally charged response and such claims get shouted down with accusations of sexism and misogyny (as in your post).

Well, which is it? Do men and women vary, with each sex having a greater or lesser tendency toward certain positive or negative traits, or is it all down to socialization?

The way I've seen this play out is that either claim will be made--depending on which puts women in a positive light in a given context.

For example, when sounding the trumpets to proclaim that more women are needed in leadership positions in business, politics and academia there is no hesitation in claiming that women and men are different, with women bringing a great number of positive traits to the table (needed to balance men's negative ones).

However, when claims are made for males having more of a positive trait (especially when made to explain men's success in a given area) or for females having more of a negative one, the response is to deny that such differences between men and women exist, to attribute it to socialization or discrimination and to accuse those making the claims of being chauvinists and misogynists.

It's real-life doublethink in action.

I think more attention needs to be paid to this in order to raise awareness of the duplicitous doublethink, so that people are required to choose one consistent position and extrapolate it through all contexts.

Official: Men are viewed as better bosses when employees surveyed, not actual better bosses.

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points7 points 15 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Men are viewed as better bosses in 2010, there is a large (not overwhelming) agreement between male and female employees - 75 and 63 isn't huge, when the base rate of perfectly gender-neutral would be 50 (this becomes even less meaningful if you think our society stereotypes men as better bosses). And from this employees draw the conclusion that women lack "Key skills" necessary for good bossing.

In all honesty, I'd be (very mildly) surprised to learn that women can perform better in leadership roles than men - in other words, the study's conclusion is probably true - but there's too little data for me to consider it opinion-altering evidence. Far too many variable are unaccounted for, and the reporting is shoddy.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 15 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Then why do fortune 500 companies with more female management do better than those without...so much so that companies are going out of their way to recruit women?

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 15 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Good point; as far as I know, companies with females on the Board of Directors do tend to do better than the market average.

There are several possible explanations. Random chance, of course - the sample size isn't that great. Public perception of 'progressive' companies, or the indirect benefits of having a workplace progressive enough to accept female CEOS (benefits such as allowing counter-culture geniuses greater leeway within the company) could also be the cause. Another hypothesis would be that - due to the various difficulties present for women - only the Sharkiest of the Sharks rise to the top. We're comparing extreme female outliers to male normals.

The last one is, in my opinion, the most likely candidate; but then again, women might just be better leaders in general.

If that were true I would be slightly surprised, as I said - but it wouldn't rock my world. In my experience women tend to be better at networking, men better at hierarchies; and leadership is primarily a hierarchal thing. But I could be wrong.

[–][deleted] -2 points-1 points0 points 15 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Which is the same thing. You can't be a "actually good boss" unless your employees perceive you as such.

[–]Mitchellonfire 0 points1 point2 points 15 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Not at all. One can be a very effective boss and be disliked, or even a beloved boss with very little effectiveness.

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points1 point 15 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

You are confusing personality with leadership. What was being surveyed was the latter.

[–]Mitchellonfire 2 points3 points4 points 15 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Really? Because I didn't see that distinction made anywhere in the article. "moody women who can't leave their personal life at home" sounds more like a personality gripe than a leadership gripe.

That's not true. Women are subject to different standars. If a woman is in a bad mood everybody gives an oppinion: oh it's pms, her emotions, moody, female hormones, whatever. If it is a man, well, he is just human!

It's just a matter of time for us to adjust to women as bosses. We have always have them as moms, teacher, nurses... serving us instead of giving us directions. Our perceptions will change...

[–]robotlichtenstein 4 points5 points6 points 15 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Also: Women make better bosses than 'moody women who can't leave personal life at home'

And may I also suggest the following: Men make better bosses than 'moody men who can't leave personal life at home'

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points5 points 15 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Organizations such as Columbia University, McKinsey & Co., Goldman Sachs, and Pepperdine University, have done research that document a clear relationship between women in senior management and corporate financial success

Hm.

Pepperdine found that the Fortune 500 firms with the best records of putting women at the top were 18 to 69 percent more profitable than the median companies in their industries.

Interesting.

It's true. Argue all you want with me, women are too emotional and irrational to be bosses.

[–]ignatiusloyola 15 points16 points17 points 15 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

I have met quite a few men who are too emotional and irrational to be bosses. Usually different kinds of emotions - like anger - but they exist.

For right or wrong, there are some people, both men and women, who just aren't cut out to manage people.

The only thing that I think should be gleaned from this survey result is that it is inappropriate to promote people based on gender/affirmative action. Promotions should be based on the qualities of the employee that make a good manager.

[–]drugsrbadmmmkay 0 points1 point2 points 15 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Ok, but we all know the term glass ceiling and when women get into a management position feel they have to overcompensate instead of just allowing their experience work for them.

[–]ignatiusloyola 1 point2 points3 points 15 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Are you really generalizing that all women overcompensate when they are in a management position?

I am sorry, I don't have the same prejudices you have, so I don't think I can agree with your view.

[–]drugsrbadmmmkay -1 points0 points1 point 15 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yes, I am guilty over generalizing until I am proven wrong. It's ok, we don't have to agree! And as the saying goes: opinions are like assholes, everyone's got one :D

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points6 points 15 years ago (28 children) | Copy Link

Yes, but you can't say whether it's a biological thing or a cultural thing. And this says that employees prefer male bosses; which is very different from who actually gets a better job done.

The reasons listed by the workers are pretty sexist, too. It's entirely possible for a female to be a straight talker, amongst other things.

[–]drugsrbadmmmkay 0 points1 point2 points 15 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

My experience with female bosses have been less than pleasant. I just feel they are too emotional.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 15 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

That's anecdotal, it's not indicative of the ability of females to be bosses.

[–]drugsrbadmmmkay 0 points1 point2 points 15 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

I believe it is and that's where we differ.

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points1 point 15 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

That's the point, it's belief, not proof. I'm not making any statement. I'm merely saying that your belief in female bosses is only a belief and that's fine. But there's no reason to act on that, or take it out on a new female boss, because you can't prove it.

[–]drugsrbadmmmkay 1 point2 points3 points 15 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Oh hell, by no means have I acted negatively on it - I chose to find another job. Also, I would never take it out on a new female boss. Working in IT Support in the past teaches you to bit your lip quite well 8)

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 15 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Hah, ok. I may not agree with you, but I have no problem with that.

[–][deleted] -5 points-4 points-3 points 15 years ago (19 children) | Copy Link

Yes, but you can't say whether it's a biological thing or a cultural thing.

It's all pure biology. It cannot be "fixed" by skewing the tests, or artificially increasing quotas for female executives, like they're doing in uber-feminist Scandinavia. Women are basically slaves to their hormones, regularly reminded every four weeks what their purpose on this planet is.

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points7 points 15 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

You've never provided any proof to substantiate your claims, you merely spew out bigoted rhetoric. You have no idea how to logically construct an argument so you resort to name-calling and hyperbole. You say that one day the science will prove you right so you never have to provide any citations. Your arguments are based on pure faith, and you dirty the purpose of this forum with your anti-science claims.

I spread the truth. Unlike you, which spreads poor-quality ad hominems. Your make-believe world of liberal lies is crushing before your eyes, and you are angry, very angry.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points5 points 15 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

You spread hate and lies. I am not angry, only saddened that people like you will die never getting the help they need, never enjoying what is truly good in this world.

[–][deleted] -3 points-2 points-1 points 15 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

I will never die.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 15 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Oh, that's just sad.

[–][deleted] -2 points-1 points0 points 15 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I think it's pretty funny though, since you all are, very soon no less.

I thought this guy was a jerk, until I read this. Now I know that he is a genius. 8/10 dude, and thats pretty good, the best I've ever rated.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 15 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yea, such a genius for making this forum into a mockery.

[–]janetasiri 5 points6 points7 points 15 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Are you really insinuating that the only purpose of a womans life is to have children? Bigots like you are why the mens rights movement is sometimes seen as misogynistic.

[+][deleted] -10 points-9 points-8 points 15 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Are you really insinuating that the only purpose of a womans life is to have children?

The only purpose of either men or women is to propagate their genes. There is no other "higher purpose" in life. We are biological machines serving the programs encoded in our genes.

However, men are much more likely to refuse the program. That behavior itself is encoded in the program. Not all of course, but great deal of. That's what happens when the society tries to bend natural laws in favor of unnatural laws of jurisprudence.

[–]theozoph -1 points0 points1 point 15 years ago* (8 children) | Copy Link

While I find such comments vastly amusing, let's be reminded that no one is slave to biology. If women's moodiness is such a cliché, it's also because they are never taught to "repress" (aka. control) their emotions. Not to mention the entitled princess complex a lot of western women develop by the time they are in their teens.

If feminists want to work on something I could approve of, they could start with that.

[–][deleted] -3 points-2 points-1 points 15 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

You cannot control the hormonal surges occurring naturally in your body. You cannot control your behavior encoded in your epigenetic code, and cemented by millions of years of a selective evolutionary pressure. Everybody is a slave to its biology. Humans are just another species of animals with inflated sense of self-worth. Just because you have a few billion more neurons than your close mammalian relatives, it doesn't make you a master of your biology. FFS, hundreds of millions of people are willfully taking all kinds of drugs and intoxicating substances every day, in order to "rectify" perfectly normal bodily reactions.

If feminists want to work on something I could approve of, they could start with that.

Yes! The problem with the entitlement complex is that it's not a bad thing for women. So fixing it would imply conceding substantial social benefits on man's expense. The entire feminist movement can be seen as the entitlement complex run amok.

[–]theozoph 1 point2 points3 points 15 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

Everyone is influenced by biology. That doesn't make us slaves to it, or we'd never have developed a culture, or something as unnatural to us as monogamy.

Evolutionary psychology is an interesting and illuminating field, but it isn't the be-all, end-all of human behavior. Cultural forces and our pesky frontal lobes have as much influence on us as evolutionary forces and our limbic and reptilian brains.

Let's not fall into a false nature vs. nurture debate here.

[–][deleted] -3 points-2 points-1 points 15 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Cultural forces and our pesky frontal lobes

Which is all also a manifestation of our biology. The battle is on another level altogether, but it still has a biological footing. The culture did not design you higher brain functions, it's the other way around. Culture of a human collective is a manifestation of underlying genetics on a macro scale, all marvelously connected in a self-reinforcing feedback loop.

[–]theozoph 1 point2 points3 points 15 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Yet allowing for a lot of diversity and meta-level organization in radical new ways, even to the possibility of self-extinction (think Easter Island, Mayans, etc.). Just as the purely biological level is open to mass-extinction events.

Nature isn't a perfect, infallible God, man. No need to worship the bitch.

[–][deleted] -3 points-2 points-1 points 15 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Extinctions of species are not "failures". They are necessary to filter the week and inferior, or the dead ends. Nature's mechanism is perfect to maintain the equilibrium and push the most stronger and adaptable to the top. Evolution has its end. Your value judgement system is clouding the big picture.

[–]theozoph 2 points3 points4 points 15 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Oooookaaaayyy. I'm just going to back away slowly from this conversation, 'kay? Don't want to set off the crazy...

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 15 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Hypocrisy! Stone him! Stone him quickly!

Human beings think they are gods. They are but worms. They think they can "fix" nature. In reality, they are destroying themselves and everything around them.

I understand now why the researcher in 12 Monkeys released the virus.

[–]JLPrant -5 points-4 points-3 points 15 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

maybe executives prefer male bosses ,, because sometimes you have to fire someone with 3 kids and a sick dog.

[–][deleted] 8 points9 points10 points 15 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

And that's an unfair generalization. Males have children too. We want to fight for males to be able to get a fair chance at custody in the event of a divorce, and we argue that males are important, just as present parental figures who share childcare equally.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points6 points 15 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Ok, what about that article posted on this reddit a few weeks ago that proved men are more emotional than women, especially during a breakup?

[–]drugsrbadmmmkay -1 points0 points1 point 15 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

A breakup has nothing to do with the workplace, I believe that women are beautiful yet flawed creatures by design. (not intelligent design)

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 15 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

So, men are only more emotional sometimes? Lol.

[–]drugsrbadmmmkay -1 points0 points1 point 15 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Exactly. Like when we come out to see our cars have a new scratch, when our favorite sports team loses, and when we open the fridge to see we are out of beer.
