My girlfriend and I were watching Nip/Tuck last night. For those of you who don't know, in the show, a white man tries to raise the son of his white ex-lover, even though the son is half black. My girlfriend is spanish, and I am white. The question came up about adoption and color. Girlfriend: "So if we adopted, would it matter what color the child is?" I thought for a minute, and responded it would. For a few reasons.

The obvious- The child should be able to decide if/when he/she wants others to know they are adopted. It would be easier for the child to be comfortable with parents that look like him/her.

The not-so-obvious- stories I have read on here about how men are being targeted by community members and law enforcement really scare me. I'm scared shitless that one day, I'll be pulled over for picking my kid up from school.

If a white man is seen with an asian female child, flags are raised. It's despicable, but it's true.

Long story short, it saddens me that I would be a target of discrimination for adopting a child that doesn't look like me. I'm sure some of you understand the fear that events could take place that would rock the foundations of my family. Just wanted to get that off my chest.
