Prenups??

Ex bf started bringing up prenups. He then started to neglect the relationship. I broke up with him a month later. He was more prepared for divorce than marriage.

If you are both coming in with children that you want to inherit your possessions and you both have premarital assets etc yes I would insist on it because I had to pay a lawyer $300 an hour to protect the appreciation value of some of my premarital assets because I had used marital funds (less than $100 over 20 years) to upkeep them. Never.again. He did not win btw.

If I was engaged I would seriously look into getting a prenup - and finding a good lawyer. in the US, some states have what is called community law rather than common law. community law essentially says that assets like property and debts are the responsibility of the couple rather than the individual. there were some crazy stores I learned about in my accounting classes with this - but some women get really screwed over in the case of the divorce or the spouses death.

prenups basically exist to protect you in the case that the marriage ends in a divorce. most married couples end up getting a house together, sometimes buy a car together, and generally invest both of their money into the house, and then into kids if they have kids.

even if you dont get a prenup, a good word of advice is to try to keep your finances as separate as possible from your partners. some people will say that they have joint accounts or joint credit cards just for paying the bills or for the kids - but we have so much technology now that this isn't necessary, and a shared account comes with a lot of risks. before you move in and get married have an understanding of how the bills will be paid and you can always send each other money - most bank apps do that. you dont want to be paying 50/50 or have him seem high value and them be telling you "well hun ill pay the $1200 mortgage" but you need to pay the insurance, car insurance for both vehicles, all the utilities, all the taxes, maitence costs, groceries, etc and that can end up being well over what he is paying, plus you'll be running the errands, doing the cleaning, and more work. so this is why I say have an understanding of what he expects of you before actually marrying him or moving in - most marriages end because of money problems!
