The reason it became taboo for men to cry is a distressing simple one. The drawbacks for society outweighed the benefits, at least in the eyes of the people that make the rules.

The reason it persists remains quite similar. On an individual level, the drawbacks typically outweigh the benefits. Society demands men open up, then ostracize men for doing just that. Society wants men to show the emotions society deems appropriate, in the manner society deems appropriate, towards the things society deems appropriate. Be mad at the people society wants? You're a hero. Get mad at the source of your personal struggle? You're selfish and unbalanced.

Society's demands of man's emotion is that it be performative. It is for others, not the man.

Please stop fetishizing crying. If you're refusing to let yourself cry, forget the haters and let it out. It feels good. But ffs, this isn't the problem. The problem is what men want to cry about.

I think it would be better to say "It's ok to cry", full stop, rather than jump through mental hoops to try to reclaim it as something "masculine". Crying is crying, it's something every human does (except maybe true sociopaths), whether they are male or female so it makes no sense to apply gender to it. In fact, things like this will probably only hurt our cause. This kind of idea encourages strict gender roles, meaning it will get harder to argue against ideas like "masculine sacrifice". De-gendering things is the path to true equality.

the only people who think men don't have moments of vulnerability, honor/empathy for their fallen comrades, etc. are women's advocates trying to craft narratives for their own benefit or useful idiots who've fallen for them.

Feminists will never admit that men have it worse. That's why they blame male problems on Patriarchy and not crying enough, going to therapy. It's our own fault. Nothing to do with women becoming ever more privileged and men sinking like rocks.
