Well to put it simply because men lived public lives and women private lives the slaves owned by either party lived different lives.

Often labor slaves were over seen by men free or otherwise, where household slaves were overseen by women often the Mistress of the house.

For women owning slaves was a means to making money so they would hold onto slaves harder and punish runaways harshers. Household slaves

In American slavery alot of sexual abuse seen by mixed race women or favored slaves was not only known by female slave owners but allowed. Infact their has been some literature written about female slave masters sexually abusing female slaves I can't find the text right now if I do find that I might add it in my post.

In fact miscegenation laws favored free white women over enslaved black or mixed race women. The children of a slave women were slaves but the children of white women and black weren't necessarily slaves infact many free men and women of color did come from that lineage, not that Union is known to be common.

Which brand of slavery and I hate using that term but in each brand of slavery things were slightly different. There is a constant of household slaves actually right now in the Middle East there are a groups of women that act as household slaves or maids American history the female slave owners will often times hold onto passports much like the male counterparts do with labor slaves and try to control how they live with the eat it even hair length.

The hair length thing is an interesting dynamic because it speaks to the idea of controlling another woman's sexual autonomy. The idea being make the other woman less attractive I don't know if this is done to prevent a woman from being abused or prevent said woman from attracting a male suitor or seducing her partner..

The situation probably varies on a case by case basis.

Cool, then all white people were culprits of slavery, how, where, and why does it justify anything? Is it cause then now white women can share the "burden of slavery" now? Yea must be some weight off the shoulders of white men. I find often when people look at history and even current events all actors in a crisis or tragedy aren't acknowledged. I'm not taking any burden of anyone's shoulder. Rather I'm pointing out a overlooked part of American history with this book that was written by a American Black Woman about slavery .

Their is no revisionism here if anything it's looking at all the facts. Yes black women were slaves and in the comments I've written about the nature slavery in Sparta to the middle east if you're interested in slavery outside of American history. And how slavery was different based on masters gender.

Cool, done, I have actually read your comment by the way. But the existence of slavery in Sparta, or even in middle eastern countries, or even in other European countries, does not justify the existence of slavery in America, why? One might say "it was just the times" sure cool, but slave revolts were happening then, slave literature about how black people does not want to be slaves existed then, white people did not just listen to them.

In the comments and how the post is framed is exclusively focusing on how women "were also culprits" and sure yes they were, what even is uncle Tom's cabin but a slight attempt at showing 'oh if you care about slaves personally why would you sell it, keep the slave for yourself' cause that's literally what the text does.

Talking about slavery and leaving black women out of it, when they were one of the worst victims of slavery, while blaming white women? What does that achieve? Mainly to blame white women, that is.

So yes, all white people are culprits of slavery, as the book proves.

Also cool, I feel sad for one side of your ancestors for being slaves, and do not like your ancestors who were slave owners surez where does that identity politics lead? Why are you deflecting literally more than half the things I am talking about in my comments? Cause I never meant you are justifying slavery.

What I meant more is you link a book about how American southern women owned and contributed to slave trade but then deflect the conversation to how spartan women had equal rights to men? They are literally different time periods.

Let's talk about it no, how all white people are culprits of slavery (third time I am writing and you are still deflecting it, here, I'll know you'll reply by saying either I don't need to answer to that cause I believe white people are to be blamed, as a generous interpretation). Why link a book about southern slave owners and then comment about how ancient spartan societies have more gender equality? Why that gap?

Ok. Just wanted to be clear.

I do think that all people who were free during the time of American slavery were guilty of inaction if they stood by and did nothing to stop slavery.

The link that I am making between American women and Spartan women is very specific. Both lived in very blatant patriarchal societies and those that belonged to upper class used slaves and land as a form of power and fought to maintain their system via shadow politics .

These women saw slavery as a means towards self determination and personal freedom. Which is so hypocritical and perverse that it almost bridges on satire . When we look at the great evils of history we have tendency to forget everything that helps it continue.
