It makes you think about how much of our economics is tied to gender politics. Women in developed countries are increasingly earning a greater share of the pie, and yet societal expectations for spending in courtship remain the same. This is untenable. Women need to stop expecting to be treated on dates, to get gifts, to have a ring bought for them as a proposal item. And men need to stop doing all that. Insist women pay their half on dates and don’t shower them with gifts—women have no incentive to change on their own here, so if men don’t change, this situation won’t. Women will complain and moan about where all the “good” men have gone, but that’s just them bitching about their loss of privilege. Men need to change our expectations of women and ourselves, and start refusing to cater to women who want to be pampered economically.

Interesting read. There’s a reason why, for example, 80 - 90% of homeless people are male. You can’t really pay rent with a penis, but you typically can with a vagina.

I think most women, if they are being honest, trade sex for goods and services. Not necessarily in a sleazy way, but it’s an exchange nonetheless. Typically men have sex because... they want sex. They are not using it as a barter to get something else of value. But women do it all the time... I buy my wife something she has been wanting, I get sex. Spend the day working hard and you get rewarded with sex. She wants you to do something she may use sex to convince you. This isn’t usually a card men can play.

There’s a lot more at play, esp capitalism, but nice read. I appreciated the criticism of the “toxic masculinity” slur being casually thrown around. I’ve noticed it’s very convenient for people that don’t wanna acknowledge how neoliberalism has affected our lives. Which is probably also a reason why it’s super common to see middle class women use that term
