I'm somewhat at "that age" where I know a lot of people who have gotten married recently.

I'd honestly say that, at least outwardly, there didn't seem to be any ring craziness. You might be able to chalk that up to my friends simply choosing better than the average, but it would seem that expensive rings as a symbol are diminishing.

I think it's likely simply a matter that the "ring craze" was the result of a wildly successful marketing campaign. IIRC, the notion that a man should spend the equivalent of three month's salary on a wedding ring was created and spread by the de Beers company to sell diamonds, and that they were also the ones who popularised the catch-phrase "A diamond is forever." Marketers consider it one of the greatest marketing success stories of all time. They created a need for the masses of men to buy something expensive and were so successful that it became widely seen as a social obligation.

Now that we have the internet and more people are becoming educated, more and more people are eschewing their "tradition". It is not entirely unlike circumcision.
