My kiddo was doing college applications a couple of months ago. She could have applied to any of the three local 'brand name' universities. She could expect almost no financial aid due to my income.

She could do a two year accounting program at the local trade school for a little less than $10K, or head to one of the big three there and expect to spend a just shy of 100K per year. That broke down into ~$60,000 tuition, ~$10,000 books, ~$10,000 in 'fees', and ~$20,000 transportation and housing costs. Of course all of them had a rider that said something along the lines of most students don't pay full tuition, and when the details come out it's mostly a mix of student loans, a few grants, and some unsubsidized private loans. No telling what that cumulative ~400K is after interest. The end results just didn't justify the expense, even if she lived at home and saved the ~$80,000 over the course of four years. Also consider that the median salary for a CPA is about $60,000 a year around here.

Now for the guys, you can do that same analysis and on top of that deal with possible kangaroo courts as well as having to sit through lectures about how evil you are on a regular basis.

I think a lot of young men could be forgiven for doing the calculations and coming to the conclusion that it's a bad deal...

You're 100% correct. College is nothing more than proving you can do your chores for a piece of paper. I stopped at my AA because didn't think getting into a huge amount of debt wasnt the best way to start my adult life. I have family members who are still paying their college debt into their late 40s. I have a friend who is already 500k in debt for dental school, crazy times.

In the 80's when I went to college, most of my peers were already pretty competent in their subject and many were just there to get the piece of paper to wave at an HR shill.

Part of it is kids take 3 classes, the minimum to go full time. It takes 5 or 6 years to get a 4 year degree. It's the least cost effective way. When I went to college taking 3, 4, or 5 classes cost the same so I took 5 each term. I cut about half a year off.

"College prepares you for life."

Debts you spend the rest of your life paying off, being constantly demonized and blamed for everything wrong in the world, living in fear of being falsely accused and punished without any investigation or a chance to speak, being taught ideologies but not any actual marketable skills for a couple years as you try to check off all your GE requirements before you even get a chance to learn something useful.

I don't want to spend years of my life being trained to accept all that. I would rather have a different sort of life.

In the U.S., feminists fought for and won legislation (WEEA) that provided the funding and authority to influence K-12 education to favor girls to the detriment of boys. It worked. We purposely decide to favor girls in education and then people act baffled that fewer boys go to college.

It just absolutely boggles my mind that articles keep bringing up the issue of boys doing worse in education and leaving out the fact we passed legislation favoring girls as if somehow that’s irrelevant.

Of course since then feminists have also twisted title IX to create a hostile environment which is also a factor. Then we have the AAUW sponsoring no boys allowed college prep programs. (Blatantly defying title IX non discrimination mandates). Some colleges are actively favoring females in STEMs. Mandatory need student programs push the idea all men are rapists. Almost all colleges have women’s studies courses which in reality are nothing more than anti-male agenda. It’s so simple: favor girls and create hostility towards males in education and boys won’t do as well. Its really no great mystery.
