In a study of men and women, they measured their gender hostility and other things like sexual assault perpetration and victimization (the main purpose of the study). A very notable finding is that cross-culturally, society has more hostility towards men than women (this includes India, South Korea, Latin America, Israel, Singapore, Europe, North America, and Australia/New Zealand). In virtually all areas in the world, society expressed either slightly more hostility or significantly more hostility towards men (more often than not, significantly more). Only in D.C. was there much more hostility towards women than men. Overall, the mean level hostility towards men was M=2.01 (SD=0.50) and the mean level hostility towards women was M=1.88 (SD=0.52).

You can see in the data that generally speaking, societies where women have less status (eg.: involvement in education, jobs, etc.) tend to have much more hostility towards men than women compared to countries where women have more status. Sweden has a lack of hostility toward both genders and no more hostility towards one over the other and they're a much more egalitarian country. Nonetheless, societies with more status of women can still have more hostilty toward men than women. This all explains why studies show that the women are wonderful effect is smaller in more egalitarian countries than ones with gender inequality. This shows that most sexism towards women or oppression against women is benevolent sexism, not hostile sexism (the type of sexism known as misogyny that feminists typically describe). Benevolent sexism is a form of sexism that cherishes women and puts them on a pedestal, but in a way that still marginalizes them as subordinate. It's the idea that women are wonderful, but weak. Examples would be the idea that women need to be protected. Even feminism itself is inherently benevolently sexist.
