I think in the US at least, the reason more men don't take paternity leave is that it's not fully paid everywhere.

If you're in a state where FMLA is not fully paid, chances are that the wife is going to take some FMLA time after giving birth - and have the pay capped at something like 60% of regular full pay.

If the husband takes the same amount of leave and his salary is also capped at 60% of full pay the family takes a full 40% pay cut for the duration that they're both on leave.

If I had to bet, I'd bet that's why more men don't take paternity leave.

Further, I'd be suspicious as a man, that taking any sort of extended paternity leave (beyond a few weeks), that I'd return to a poisoned well with regard to my future at the company.

I KNOW the law and HR is supposed to protect against the concept of the "poisoned well" but everyone knows how that REALLY works from the perspective of the worker.

We also know that if a woman complained of a poisoned well after returning from maternity leave, it would be splashed all over the news with tons of media coverage.

If a man complained about a poisoned well, the only media coverage of it would be to ask if the guy needed to be put under watch for potential terrorist workplace shootings in the future.

I actually think this will help men more, 24 month of paid parental leave is epic, I wish I had that kind of time when my kids were young.

This is a good initiative. One area where women do suffer injustice is in child birth and early parenting, when they miss out on income, and superannuation contributions due to child care work.

As the benefit is gender neutral and will be paid for men or women (covers the stay at home dad), it provides a much needed address of loss of income for PARENTS.

Of course, the issue isn't a bad as feminists make out when they compare the superannuation of women to men, forgetting that for married or co-habitating couples, partners are entitled to half their partners superannuation. So when a women takes time off work for child birth/care, she is automatically entitled to the super the father is earning. They always leave this out of the femsplaining about wage gap.
