From a dominant/ confident perspective you shouldn't be asking him at all. You should be telling him.

"I am going to marry your daughter and would be honored/happy/proud to have your blessing"

Outcome independence as a principle says your decision to marry this woman isn't dependent on his answer. If it is you probably aren't approaching this from the perspective you think you are.

I commend you on this. This was more nerve wracking for me than actually asking my wife to marry me.

I said something along the lines of:

Mr Smith, Jane and I have been together for 3 years, and I feel I've been part of your family for that time too. I love Jayne very much, and wanted to ask for your blessing before I ask Jane to marry me and unite our families.

For me, funny enough, we were on our way up to their place in an elevator… I wasn’t sure when else we would be alone, so I just did it quickly. He gave some advice about family & finances being important, just general good advice that seemed appropriate. In retrospect I probably cornered him a little, but it’s 17 years later, and the wife jokes that I get along better with her parents than she does.

I don’t remember the exact phrasing, but it was something along the lines of, “I know it may be a little traditional these days, but I think that “Jane” is the one, so I’m going to ask her to get married.”

I’ve always been respectful, and actually added a bit of humor to the family dynamic, so I think it was easy for him to give me a thumbs up.
