It is blatantly unfair that some are drafted, risking life and limb. as well as PTSD, and not compensated for it. I understand that nations need soldiers, but the deal seems very unfair. In neighboring Poland, people who choose to be miners have a risky job, and so received both higher pay and retire 10(?) years earlier. Should Ukraine grant veterans early retirement? Higher salaries? Reduced taxation? Ownership of land recaptured from the Russians? What would make the outcome more fair?

Edit: Based on the comments below I would like to say that every veteran in every country should get the following.

  1. Freedom from foreign rule.
  2. A real democracy.
  3. A place to live or work. An apartment in the city, or a house in the country, a plot of land or reasonable size if they wish to farm it.
  4. Health care for life.
  5. Early retirement.
  6. Full child custody if their wife refuses to return to Ukraine, or gets married while abroad.

Just for comparison purposes, Wikipedia says that Ukraine now has about 340K Soldiers. The US is sending about $13 billion on Ukraine, so that comes to about $50,000 per soldier. Of course the soldiers will never see that money. In Poland you can buy a reasonable apartment for that price. In Ukraine probably a nice one.

Another comparison, Ukraine is 600,000 square Km . Without the army that would all belong to Russia, so that is about 2 km square per Solider. I think half of that would be a good payment to each soldier. Of course they will never see that either. Nor do they really need that much. And who do they take it from? Just a place to live or farm should be enough for each soldier.

What do you think would be fair compensation? For now let us ignore the question of whether the draft is fair or not, or if there should be a war or not. And this should apply to every country, not just Ukraine.
