A look at Canada prison system

From a men's rights perspective I'm neutral on it. So long as all human beings are treated the same, male and female, I don't have much of a position. Reason being that while prisons are undoubtedly unpleasant to be in, you usually have to have caused harm to someone else to get inside, and that someone is usually a man.

I suppose I could state my preference that prisons are for violent offences, putting someone inside for parking tickets is ridiculous. I'm against the idea of shutting down prisons because of the other effects it has, as mentioned in the summary, that of removing dangerous offenders from society for a period of time, and to instill a feeling of justice done to the victims of crime/society in general.

That latter one is severely hampered by plea bargaining, parole and time off for good behaviour. The answer to that could be to get non-violent offenders out of prison and reduce the time off for parole. Supervision after sentence completion should be automatic anyway.

The long term goal should be abolition of prison for all but the people you would otherwise execute. That would depend on a long period of social and economic reforms and beefing up mental health resources. In the meantime prisons should be make fairly luxurious and be therapeutic and job training oriented. The logic being, your hardcore offenders will offend anyway, and if they have the option age out of crime later. So you can use their prime crime years to be training them for a career. If it works great, if it doesn’t they were off the streets and can contribute to society upon release/aging out. For the non hardcore, they will still not want to go to prison even if it is luxurious, because they won’t be free. To the extent this deterrent lessens is the extent you haven’t addressed poverty and economic/social empowerment.

The prison system is broken in Canada and prisoners keep refunding and the prisons are bad and abusive and the guards are kind of not good.

What are your guys thoughts on this subject
