This is not a gender issue. This is a gun control vs gun lobby issue. The US just needs to get its act together, like other Western countries.

I think the best way to stop young men from committing mass shootings would be to end the assumption of male hyperagency (especially ending the harmful notion of toxic masculinity). Primarily, the main perpetrators of mass shooters are either bullied, have some form of mental disorder preventing the formation of proper friend groups, or in the case of Elliot Rodger perceive themselves as some kind of failed man. The assumption of male hyperagency in this case effectively demands them to fix the issue themselves, especially in conjunction with the gender empathy gap.

The primary reason we see young men getting radicalized by the alt right is in terms of marketing, the alt right has masterfully exploited male hyperagency. The alt right is the only movement that tells young men “your issues aren’t your fault.” This is in contrast to conservatives, who tell young men their issues are their fault, and progressives, who tell men their issues are because of their privilege. Granted, the alt right teaches these young men to blame whatever ethnic minority, but it still attracts young men as it is the only movement to initially tell men “it’s not your fault.” Is we can end the assumption of male hyperagency in culture and institutions, we could probably stop a lot of extremist radicalization and consistently mass shootings.
