The kicker is that under the British legal system, she now has to pay the Bank’s legal fees as well as her own! I’m thinking the Bank probably had a large team of solicitors and barristers, so she’s likely to get a hefty legal bill for which she’ll be liable but I’m not sure she’ll have a job.

It used to be the case that if you had a degree in a field that you didn't want to work in, or you just weren't particuiarly very good at, you could use it to get into banking. Only if it was directly related to her job would it make any difference.

I’ve sort of experienced this first hand, more than once. I work in social media/tech. In the last 5 years, at two different company’s, I’ve had female coworkers talk about how they’re being held back & underpaid because they’re women (which absolutely does happen). In three separate cases it was proved they make more money than their male coworkers of the same title, & the males had more experience & higher qualifications than them. All three times they shut up real quick, stopped mingling, complained about a hostile work environment & were gone within 9 months.

I'd love to hear how she feels when I mention that some 4th year Union Carpenter Apprentices straight out of high school make more than she does.

She makes just under $85,000 with bonus. A Union Carpenter's Apprentice with 3-4 years experience in San Francisco makes about the same amount.

A Journeyman Carpenter makes a base pay between $99,049.00 and $114,088.00 dependent on the work area, plus benefits. You're only useful in a market where they need your skills and how qualified you are to do the work. She seems like she's overestimating her worth.
