almost-50M, and my wife is 44F. Married 19yrs. Our son is 18 and has a developmental disability. We all share an apartment, but my wife is supposedly moving out ASAP for a nearby studio of her own. No assets of real value. Lots of debts. I make ok money (livable wage, govt/union work) and my wife has been "voluntarily underemployed" for years (works retail and could get higher paying work and/or more hours, especially as I work from home re: son's care, but she has had a long list of reasons why she wouldn't - yet has now added shifts suddenly, after a decade of refusing to do so, as she needs more income to afford own place). I have a decent pension building up and do NOT want her to be able to touch it (the economics of our marriage have been embarrassingly extreme/unfair, and while I know it's difficult to not share part of a pension, along with not paying some spousal support with our difference in income, my son and I are paycheck to paycheck, and beyond that it would just be unfair, not that that would matter if divorce becomes contested).
Basically, she walked all over me for the last decade or more (look up "covert narcissist", as she definitely is one), and I wouldn't allow myself to truly see it, as (mainly because) I want my son to have his family - he is autistic, and consistency is everything for him being able to thrive in life. But my wife pushed things more and more until I finally said "if you don't want to be married anymore, I won't try to stop you", to which she could have acted a LITTLE less pleased. Ha. (I oddly still like her, even if, the more this all sets on, the more I see how extreme and emotionally, psychologically and economically abusive/manipulate her treatment of me had been for so long.
ok, brevity: She says she is okay with a so-called amicable, nondisputed divorce. To me, this means she won't touch my pension nor request support/alimony. but she also keeps telling me that there is no rush to do the paperwork. But I want to do this as soon as possible, both so she doesn't reconsider the economics of it (honestly, if anything, she should be paying a little each month to us as our lease runs through the spring and our budget is based on her contributing at least a little bit each month, but I don't want to open that can of worms in court and risk having my pension or income included in anything) And because from what I've read about covert narcissists, they will want to drag out things like this as the drama and related attention is good for their ego. And I want the opposite- no drama, or at least minimal drama.
But then there is the issue of our son, his care, my not really knowing the legalities of someone being over 18, but needing the care of their parents, and how that works with custody and child support and such. I'm thinking we can figure that out once we get the basic papers signed, but I'm not 100% positive. As of now, it seems like he and I will live together for this foreseeable future, which I am happy about - He's my son and I love him and I want him to live with me as long as he can/ wants to, and yet I have no idea what her plan is in terms of his staying with her ever or visiting or her coming here to hang out with him or whatnot. Anyways, any thoughts?
