Men Sheds are actually a pretty good outlet for men and in particular men's mental health stuff. I regularly go to a mens group in my area and listen to the stories men talk about that they know that they can talk about in a non-judgemental environment.

I find it interesting that all the people against a men only space celebrate women only spaces, or "non-men" only spaces. If you look at ALL cultures there is always an element of "men's business" or "women's business". Traditionally indigenous cultures and customs have been passed down this way, so people opposed to men sheds, or men only spaces are also incredibly racist. Even some religions have single sex spaces for customs and ceremonies, islam culture (religion) for example is incredibly gendered.

There is nothing wrong with mens spaces, and women's spaces, done properly.

People who voice opposition to such spaces are bigoted.

I agree with that completely. In fact the Mens Shed movement was set up precisely to deal with men’s mental health issues, particularly amongst retirees.

I’ve been railing about this for sometime, because you’re absolutely right. The same people who celebrate “womens spaces” and “safe spaces” are the ones demanding that women be admitted to any and all male spaces with the possible exception of changing rooms.

In my city, the “Equal Opportunity Commissioner” regularly makes threats against the Weld Club because it is still a male only club. And we get feminists writing into the paper asserting it’s “different” for women to have all female clubs and spaces. Rights for me and not for thee? You betcha!

I wholeheartedly agree with you, these spaces are important. What saddens me most though is not the full frontal opposition to male spaces; this is easily shown to be bigoted and wrong. Rather it is the insidious worming in and undermining of these spaces. I have posted in this thread already my experience of a Men’s Shed, and I wonder if others have seen the same.

I suspect it begins with an innocent offer to come and make tea, or bring a cake, but it ends with a full on meeting of the WI with a few subdued men in the background quietly getting on with something in silence. Why can some people not accept that certain places are not open to them? It is a MEN’s Shed. By all means bring your father, your brother, your son, maybe even your dog, but this is not a venue to bring your wife along to!

Yes why do people do this. This is our biggest problem: men selling out other men. Females work like a hive mind and all support eachother. Men however would sell another man out for a females approval in a heartbeat.

Orthodox Jews have men only spaces as well. I remember asking why isn't there a Men's Officer in an organisation. Was told it's because men have privelage. Considering men are at risk with suicide, they need a voice.

Even Masonic Lodges have this.

Women are outright not allowed to join, but I still get my monthly newsletter about my Lodge, written by a woman, sent from a woman's email address. Fucking hell. Women aren't supposed to be remotely involved. Men only means men only. My grandfather would be pissed. He went to Lodge every week, telling his wife that he was going to spend time with some friends. She knew he was a member but he kept the secrets properly. Nobody in town except the membership knew when they were meeting, who the members were, what their finances looked like, or what their ritual looked like. Now all of that is open, their fucking calendar is kept by a nonmember, they have nonmembers managing the books, they publish rosters... it's totally pointless for them to even have an organization. The whole point was to be secret and that's gone.

This is the fucking worst... the ABSOLUTE worst!

It's all good to have "Women-only" spaces, but somehow, a "Men-only" space is not allowed? GTFO. There is no appreciable reason for this dichotomy. Men who simp and white knight for women by selling out these men's spaces like that should be abolished from them along with the women.

Going back now, it will be 3 years in a couple weeks, in the fall before COVID began, my good buddy and I began to build a 16' x 24' workshop on his property. We framed and poured the concrete foundation with the help of another friend of his who owned a concrete business. We then framed the structure and pieced it all together with a mixture of salvaged components (roof trusses and metal roofing and beams) and newly purchased materials.

It took about 6 months of us working weekends, and an hour or two a couple nights a week to finish it. It is a fantastic workshop with all the workbenches and power tools and hand tools you could want to do all manner of woodworking projects, and has enough space left over for a fridge and a dart board with regulation oche. We even have a little camper toilet and sink in there. There is a TV and stereo, a wood burning stove, and an air conditioner for the summer.

For my buddy and me and a bunch of our guy friends from the neighborhood, it is a project space year round, and hangout during the colder months or rainy weekends. We build all manner of stuff, projects for our families, etc. and when it's too cold or rainy to be outside we spark up the stove and throw darts (Darts and Farts, lol) and play guitar and bullshit our weekend evenings away.

During the weekend nights when we're hanging out and not actively doing projects, we might have a game on the TV, or the stereo playing whatever music, and we're throwing darts and breaking balls or playing guitar and so on and so forth. It's just a bunch of guys, hanging out, drinking beers, smoking cigars, telling stories, jokes, commiserating, getting each other's advice, planning future projects, and sometimes bitching about our wives, though honestly, that is literally less than 5% of the time we spend.

The latest project we're working on is making an aluminum foundry to melt down all the beer cans we empty in there and then cast them into shot glasses to put into our ShotSki... because... why the fuck not? Anyway...

If our wives are bored, or they finish with their jewelry/Tupperware/dildo party they will occasionally come down and join us, and I gotta tell you, the ENTIRE atmosphere changes. Everything is different - and not as good.

The women show up and since they don't want to play darts (they're welcome to, but they really aren't competitive, so they don't enjoy themselves), they want to watch the TV, and want us to turn off the music, or have us put on music that they want to hear... and put the fucking ID channel on the TV - as if the TV and couches in the living room in the house don't exist...

I can only imagine how it might be to have women you don't know showing up and wanting to intrude and how shitty that would be...

I was going through a rough patch and felt that I needed a male haven in my life. I heard about Men’s Sheds and was very interested; the concept was exactly what I was looking for.

I went to the local one and found almost as many women present as men. They were making tea and pottering around, joining every conversation. It felt like they were the teachers in a schoolroom full of men; supervising and overseeing. I was so disappointed. I never went back.

I’ve now moved hundreds of miles away. There is a local branch that I have never visited, but it is branded as “(Not just) Men’s Shed” so I don’t hold out much hope for that one either.

*an interesting postscript: every time I typed ‘Men’s Shed’ my iPhone changed it to ‘Men’s She’d’ - even autocorrect won’t allow a male only space!

Not surprised in the least.

A while back I read about women in Mens sheds. They went on about this older woman who “so wonderfully” brings scones along. And they’re all supposedly “soooooooo respectful” of the “fact it’s a Mens space”! Or so the journo and those running the show claimed. How is it a “Mens space” if these women are there? They’re members, not caterers or bar staff. In my state, equal opportunity laws specifically prohibit members being treated differently due to sex. So I’d call BS on that assertion. And in any case, the dynamic changes once a woman is there, certainly the topics and the ways of discussing this do. It works the other way too. In Uni we went on a field trip, and I was amongst a large group of girls. But seated at the end, and they forgot I was there. I’d never heard a group of women discuss the sorts of topics they did, and certainly not the language and attitudes they expressed. It was very enlightening. And they would certainly have not said what they did (or in the manner they did) had they realised I was there. It’s reality.

Men's Sheds have enjoyed a short but successful history of providing men places where they can talk to each other in a male environment, without interruption/disruption/interference from women. It only took a little bit of success to attract the interruptors/disruptors/interruptors, so eager to make it all about women and girls.

I don't care if they are good people or not. How many men will not go to Men's Sheds now because of the imposition of these women?

Could you imagine being upset that a woman goes into a shed? Bro if you’re an angry virgin just say that

Wow, good one! Who writes your material?

Maybe the next version of Grammerly can use this as an example in their adverts: "This sentence is grammatically correct, but utter juvenile absurdity. Grammerly can help you avoid making a fool of yourself by writing such drivel."

WOW... I actually feel sorry for you. I hope you get the help you need

Attacking men's sexuality current year, get a life you are so out of touch.

One of the main reasons men feel alienated is because their spaces have been taking over and the dynamic that used to bond men with each other no longer exists, because like she said "women are everywhere".

Not only that, but while men's spaces are being taking over, women's spaces are encouraged and expanding. For example, under pressure boy scouts were forced to recruit girls, but girl scouts is for girls only. Companies, work spaces, sports, movies, games, education, government agencies, gyms, facilities, all of them practice that.

Destroy men's spaces because they are toxic, expand women's spaces because they are empowering.

I was watching Wheel of Fortune last night and the one stupid bitch in the middle owns 2 gyms ONLY for women, to be “physically and mentally eMpOwErEd.” I’m so glad she lost the game and I was booing at her the whole time lol. Plus she recently got engaged, I really wish I could tell that poor guy to dump her smug ass. 🤦‍♂️ but he’s probably a huge simp.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I'll bet that 'Eight Ace', the thirsty cartoon character from 'Viz' comics, wouldn't let them in!

[–]Mother-Key582 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Any time I asked this question on here in the past, people would be all “men don’t need these things because then we’ll sound like we’re CoMpLaiNiNg” or “b-but that’s SeXist.” Seriously? We NEED men only gyms. The people that go “b-but eVeRy daY iS mENs dAy, mEN hAVe ALWAYS hAD thEir oWn sPaces” need a serious fucking reality check.
