It’s great to see articles that acknowledge the discrimination against boys and young men in education. I particularly liked that this article acknowledged this discrimination has life long consequences for an enormous number of males.

I’ll make the same basic criticism I often do however: There has been a conscious effort to focus on girls to the detriment of boys. Dr. Hoff Sommers documents this purposeful discrimination very well in her book “The War Against Boys” first published in 2000. (Other authors as well).

The discrimination against males in education is well documented, and clearly many writers know this, yet they are too afraid to address the cause of the problem. While I appreciate they acknowledge the discrimination, we don’t stand a chance of correcting this discrimination until we acknowledge the cause.

To such authors I say: I appreciate your acknowledgment of the discrimination boys and young men face in education, but seriously, grow a pair and address the known causes of the discrimination.

Let's all grow a pair and call our the BS as it happens. I've already started it in my social circles. I no longer stay quiet when I hear male-bashing or when women are placed on a pedestal for no other reason then their gender. We all need to speak up for our children's sake.

As a math teacher I am well aware of this issue. One personal anecdote is that girls handwriting and general orderliness makes tests easier to follow and looks more structured than a lot of boys. I've also noticed oral mathematics are generally easier for boys who are better at visualizing and rationalizing their way to the answer

I remember another study that found handwriting quality was part of the reason girls got better grades even though boys tested just as well in terms of knowledge.

good to see this study referenced / discussed.

The discrimination against boys in education begins from preschool, but is also reflected in the ways boys are treated by their mothers before formal education begins. As formal education has commenced earlier in life, so too has the bias become more pervasive and severe.

Poor results in humanities and literacy reflect this bias, boys disengaging from language education steeped in sexist materials and frank misandry.

Can't remember the school in NY, but the students grades were struggling, esp the boys. All the principal did was put the kids in uniforms, separate the boys and girls during their classes. Everything else was co-ed, lunches, social clubs, chorus, etc.

Grades skyrocketed!
