I've seen feminists complain how record labels sign mostly men and mostly men are in the top 40 (look it up). This isn't due to society hating women. It's because female artists are rarely listened to by men because it's seen as unmanly. Male artists are liked by both men and women because male artists aren't necessarily seen as manly music (unless it's metal, which is mostly liked by men). Women who defy their gender roles aren't as punished as men who do, because male gender roles are interpreted as harder to conform to (e.g.: being muscular, stoic, never crying, being rich, etc.) compared to female roles (e.g.: being kind, passive and emotional). This is why feminine men are hated more, not because society hates femininity. In fact, people actually viewed feminine gender roles more positively than the masculine ones.

So because men are half of people, and female artists will only being liked by women but male artists (unless its hypermasculine music like metal) will be liked by both men and women, that's why male artists have more chart success, and record labels sign more men because they only sign whoever makes money. Also, men are more likely to play an instrument (look it up), certainly the kind that plays in more underground music, which is why underground labels sign mostly men.

If a woman makes music that will sell, record labels will no doubt sign her.

I wouldnt call TikTok videos "the music industry"... if women sexualize themselves on the internet that was always an easy way to get views, regardless of whether it is about music or anything else.

The music industry has been emasculating men since at least the 70's. When was the last time you heard any mainstream music that had a mans bass or deep baritone voice? Literally the only place it exists is in metal music and rap (but usually as a back up vocals). They do this because they don't want men to feel strong because of the power of their voices.

Also to address your statement more directly, the music industry is complete fucking trash right now. The only music that gets produced and promoted is girls softy speaking into the mic - they dont sing because they cant - they dont have the talent, or whiney almost female sounding male tenors to bastardized hip hop techno. Sure, there are still very talented female artists out there but they are really the exception now.

I've just been reminded on another thread of She's the Man. My movie pitch is for an aspiring singer songwriter who puts his heart out there on open mike nights only to be outshone by cute quirky girls who started playing the ukulele six months ago, so with the help of his gay friend he braids his hair and creates an "adorkable" female persona... Would never work, of course - you can fake being a musician because most people aren't musically educated enough to judge, but you can't fake the freshness and beauty of a 20 year old woman because that appreciation is hardcoded in humanity.

This is why music production is where I prefer to do. There are women who produce music but it's not as a popular choice as being a singer.

I agree - I've been in the music industry for many years, and as a woman, I've said the same thing.

I recognized that being something of a novelty (15 years ago, not as many chicks in rock bands), as well as being relatively attractive, opened doors that probably wouldn't have been opened on talent alone if I were a man.

It made me want to practice harder to prove myself - as someone with integrity, I didn't want to have an unfair advantage, though there's not much one can do about it except try to excel in their craft to show they deserve to be there.

I see the music videos and so many 'artists' seem confused about whether they are a model or a musician. What do those 5 outfit changes have to do with the song? The song that someone else wrote, that you're using auto-tune on, and that still sucks, while a guy with genuine talent and original music struggles to find an open mic to play at.

it's the same problem in the porn industry. the only way women are going to lose sexual power is if men boycott women who sell sex; you can't sell something that no one wants.
