Seems reasonable in longer marriages to split everything 50/50. If there is no alimony this might actually be better than some US divorce law where you have to give 50% of everything and 30% of your income till you die.

This has to do with population control and maintaining civil control, not feminism or any kind of activism. Matters like these are matters that no amount of discourse will solve, as they are matters firmly settled outside the field of public view.

India has several unique problems:

1) India has given up on official attempts at population control.

2) India has a large gender imbalance of more men then women.

It goes without saying, if India continues to grow, it will only start a regional war, as China and neighboring nations with shrinking populations won't allow India to commit genocide against them via out-breeding.

China right now has troops positioned to seize Northern India(the bread basket of India, without Northern India, the majority of India's population would starve to death within a year or two). Plus, India's ICBM program to develop a missile capable of reaching Beijing has hit snags, and most estimates say it is unlikely the system will ever work properly. So by the time that is up and running, the Chinese will of had time to steal, err develop counter measures.

Importantly though, India has a large surplus of men who will only know poverty and never know what it is like to date let alone marry. China has a similar problem, but they used the surplus labor for their growth. The surplus population in India is simply too unusable and too violent.

India runs the risk of civil war if the situation continues. India's only way out is to embrace this madness, as it kills two birds with one stone. It solves their over population problem(we will be seeing extreme feminism in India int eh coming years), and it makes the millions upon millions of men who have zero chance more complacent about it all.

People can't miss what they don't want, or are conditioned to not want. And if things get bad enough that violence between the genders escalates into a true gender war or insurgency(with men of India lashing out against women of India) we will see a long term and rapid de-population that will make the West's population winter seem like a baby boom.

I don't think people should be concerned about this, and should focus more on our own civilization(Western Civilization).

that is why indian guys shouldn't get arranged marriages to women who have had divorces in their families

a divorce will destroy the man. the only thing stopping his wife from divorcing him is family shaming. so it is much easier for a woman who has seen her family accept a family member's divorce to ask for one herself.

India is one of the places that I think really need feminism... but I don't think this law is the way to promote equality. If anything I could see this causing more violence against women who seek divorces.

I actually don't have a problem with this. I mean, divorce should be something that either party should be able to complete independent of the other.

The 50% thing is usually how it works though, isn't it? I mean, when you marry someone you're assuming equal rights, responsibility and reward for all income made by the couple. You file taxes jointly and you get benefits jointly.

That's because marriage has been assumed by the courts to have an understood recognition of shared wealth.

If you sign a pre-nup which denies this recognition it's fine, and india should have something like this, but this might be good progress from where the law was.
