Good on the author for calling their BS and exposing it. I think people have to start doing this more to make it obvious that there are some pretty stupid double standards out there.

How can men so consistently act against their own self-interest?

I think it's an inbuilt instinct. In our more primitive past, it paid off in general. You can see a similar bias when parents sacrifice for their children.

These days, the instinct is no longer well matched to our circumstances. We see falling birthrates and other societal damage too. Yet the instinct remains.

The hypocrisy comes when it clashes with "rational" beliefs like equality. Cognitive dissonance is uncomfortable, so we reach for the nearest plausible explanation, without examining whether it makes any more than surface sense. This can result in ludicrous contradictions, like Anonymous describes.

I'm not sure you can do much about it. Sit back and get your laughs in, while we plummet over the edge of the cliff.

I think this author has it partially all wrong... It's not that men don't care, or are fearful of women, its that men join these things (not all, but many) to be in the company of women, and use it as a dating tool. That's fine. That's also why women would rightly want a "safe space" where they won't be hit on. This also gives the tacit admission that single ladies may get hit on, etc, during the co-ed functions, and that it is not to be banished (ie, its not sexual harassment to flirt when on those).

The issue here is that men-only events are banned, and banned in a very weasel fashion. The men-only events may not prove to be very popular, especially if most of the events are primarily men anyways (I don't know either way). That still doesn't mean they should be banned.
