I disagree that "mainstream" feminists - or even academics at the top of their field in gender studies - would advocate rape of any kind. I'm pretty heavily involved in feminist and queer advocacy groups on my (very liberal) campus, and I've never heard anything even close to this sort of position: rape is fucked up, no matter who is involved.

As for the article above, it certainly seems like a case that shouldn't be any more or less morally ambiguous than any other case of statutory - gender should be irrelevant in such situations, and I'm not really sure what the protestors think is different about this case. However, there does seem to be some homophobia implicit in the claim that the older girl "made" her victim gay - while she may have taken advantage of the other girl's youthfulness, there's no reason to think that the girl wasn't already attracted to girls. It makes queerness sound like a cult. In cases of heterosexual statutory, we don't wonder whether the younger person involved was "actually" straight - it's usually a given. This girl would be better off with other girls closer to her own age, but I don't know what evidence there is to suggest she wasn't attracted to girls before this incident.

However, I do agree that there can be a greater social standard of hypocrisy when it comes to statutory rape when the rapist is female and especially when the survivor is male - it seems to cause less outrage than when the genders are reversed.

I don't know how much clearer it could be. It is Kaitlyn's parents making the accusation. Further down.

The mother of the younger girl, meanwhile, reportedly says that “she's just a mom protecting her daughter” and that this is not about gay rights. The prosecutors also see no shadow of homophobia. "The law doesn't make any differentiation. It doesn't matter if it's two girls or two boys, or an older boy and a younger girl or an older girl and a younger boy. Whatever the combination, it doesn't matter," State Attorney Bruce Colton said.

Just because it involves homosexuals, doesn't automatically make it an issue of homophobia. Under the law an 18 year old having sexual contact with a 14 year old is wrong. If they only charged people, or were more likely to charge people in same sex relationships, then it would be homophobia.

1.) What you (and almost everyone on this sub-reddit) seem to not realize is that The Vagina Monologues is the work of ONE person. It is NOT a textbook on feminist theory. It is considered 'art' and its purpose is to be analyzed and critiqued, not to say 'rape is OK'. The Monologues are not 'celebrating' statutory female-on-female rape.

2.) The Monologues are based on Ensler's interviews with real women, so that female-on-female statutory rape piece? That actually happened, and it was based on her own feelings about it (as the 13 year old.) The Monologues are communicating her feelings about the incident, not supporting it or what happened.

Is there anything else to support your theory that feminist lesbians are all for statutory rape or are you basing this solely on an artistic piece based on real women's experiences? Somehow I doubt you've ever met or spoken to any lesbians.

What part of COMMUNICATING THE WOMAN'S OWN FEELINGS/THOUGHTS on her OWN RAPE do you not understand? That was HER personal feeling on it, not Ensler's, Ensler's job was to put into writing what she learned from her interview.

I'm not saying it was a great way of putting it, but art is often controversial. Ever hear of Lolita? It doesn't support statutory rape per se, but it does represent it in a somewhat positive light, as well as pedophilia. You feel BAD for the pedophile in this story. It causes inner conflict, it's 'art.'

This book has also spawned a 'Lolita' fandom where men fetishize little girls and adult women dressing like little girls.

Where's your outrage over that? Does that mean that ALL men fetishize little girls, or does it just mean that SOME men do?

Hahaha you're hilarious. Women can be JUST as creepy. I won't say that there aren't double standards (there are, both ways) but show me ANYONE who wouldn't call a 40 year old women hitting on an 18 year old boy creepy. A 40 year old woman shouldn't have any interest in someone that young, regardless of whether they're legal or not.

Also, just because it's consensual doesn't mean there isn't still an 'ick' factor. Being 18 doesn't mean you're suddenly mature enough or ready for sex. Have you been around 18 year olds? They may be considered adults by the law, or fully grown by science (except not really since your brain isn't fully developed until 21), but many of them are just graduating high school and still, deep down, children. The fact that any older man or woman would be interested in an 18 year old is just plain creepy.

Yes, it may be consensual, but usually the 18 year old has serious issues in his or her life if they're willing to consent to sex with someone twice their age. Not always, but much more often than not.
