You could get your TEFL certificate first, but if what I've read about the women in Shanghai (especially in the blossoming middle-class) is true, you'd be well advise to choose another city.

Why Shanghai? Why not start off somewhere easy where you could get a job teaching English (e.g. Thailand), learn the ropes of being an expat and then choose your destination?

Alternatively, spend some time travelling in backpacker's hostels and getting info from other travellers.

Maybe you should list any job skills you have and languages you speak. You've already demonstrated that you're a quitter who jumps into major life decisions without a solid plan, so you might want to balance those out with some positive traits of yours.
