Has anyone read this book by Professor Iain McGilchrist? If you're puzzled about how the relationship between men and women is rapidly turning into a sh*tshow, the text contains many answers, cleverly rendered obtuse by the good Professor. But, let's cut to the chase. The left brain hemisphere runs on the pleasure principle, the main neurotransmitter is dopamine, and its effects are amplified by oestrogen. The left hemisphere likes to control things, to the extent that it will use other human beings as tools to get what it wants. It refuses to take responsibility for its actions, and will confabulate all sorts of excuses to lay the blame on others. It vastly over-rates its own abilities. Is this beginning to sound like anyone we know?

By contrast, the right hemisphere has a predominance of adrenergic circuitry, is sensitive to testosterone, and appears particularly resistant to 'burnout' when stressed. Unlike the 'grasping' behaviour of the left hemisphere, the right hemisphere holds non-materialistic values, has the most highly-evolved prefrontal cortex, allowing a more complete overview of situations, and is activated during both teamwork and competition.

The corpus callosum, the information superhighway between the hemispheres, shows particular differences on adolescence. Oestrogen causes release of GABA, an inhibitory neurotransmitter, whose function is to prevent the right brain from interfering in left brain processing. Testosterone allows release of glutamate (an excitatory neurotransmitter) in the corpus callosum, so that both right and left hemispheres can take part in efficient parallel processing.

Now here's the thing. Girls mature more quickly than boys. They become apparent goddesses, while we remain spotty adolescents for a few more years. We're enthralled by them, entranced.... can't wait to have sex with them. Before long, we've probably helped fulfil the female mission of motherhood, and are waking up to the realities of our own mission statement - to provide for that female, for the rest of our lives. But, the male right brain is unlikely to be satisfied by working a boring, routine job, dedicating itself exclusively to the obligations and constraints of a society dominated by the wants and needs of women, with excitement, chance and danger consigned to the past. Yet, until fairly recently, these restricted, female-imposed horizons would probably have sufficed for the average male.

What is going on? Why is competing in the rat-race no longer enough for men? And why does it appear that today's women operate within an arena of entitled cognitive dissonance, where they give not a single thought to the needs of men? The answer is that women haven't changed, but men are undergoing a period of rapid, fundamental transition, where more and more of us will be birthed as right hemisphere dominant. This has its roots in the modern economic necessities which have drastically delayed motherhood. Only a few decades ago, most men would have been born to young, vigorous mothers, with strong oestrogen. They would have emerged as left brain dominant, driving a competitive nature to gain resources for themselves, and thereby increasing their own procreation prospects. Men with resources will attract women. But, men born to older mothers will be increasingly right-brained, and less materialistic as a consequence. The dopamine pathways so essential to left brain thinking will be inhibited in these late-born boys. When they grow to be men, they will find themselves increasingly incompatible with females of their peer group.

The result is an increasing polarisation of the sexes in the western world, a phenomenon occurring with incredible speed. Men will become increasingly red-pilled, and will refuse to be used as the mere tools of women. Meanwhile, women will demand more support and legislative protection from society, as men will not be fulfilling their traditional roles as provider and protector. It's already happening, all around us....
