Just listened to the recording. So, basically, the guy goes on for a while, asks several questions about the definition of a microaggression and who counts as a “marginalized group,” and accuses the presenter of only supporting her arguments with anecdotal evidence.

It could be argued that the guy was a little disrespectful in that he was challenging the speaker in a somewhat hostile way, but he never raised his voice, never got insulting, he just criticized her presentation.

A year-long suspension for that behavior is a gross over-reaction, and clearly one made for political purposes. The university administrators should be ashamed.

I recently made similar points as this guy did in my company’s yearly lecture on cultural diversity issues in the workplace, which talked about microaggressions. I pointed out that calling what was said a microaggression assumes hostile intent on the part of the speaker, and the response from the lecturer was that the speaker’s intent was not important, only the impact. I retorted that I strongly disagreed with that, and maintained that any healthy resolution to a conflict over someone accidentally offending someone else requires taking both intent and impact into account, and it was ethically wrong to take the offended’s side by default in all situations. The speaker disagreed, and I got a lot of flak from other people for it, but thankfully I still have my job.

These universities are really going crazy with this social justice bullshit. It’s religious at this point—“thou shalt not question the orthodoxy.” Profoundly sexist and racist, too. Absolutely disgusting.

This is interesting, I can't listen to the recording now, but commenters are saying both that he was not disrespectful...

I didn't know University of Virginia wanted to become a laughingstock.The recording of the episode shows quite clearly that the student was not antagonistic. In fact, the student's behavior here is quite considerate while he is under duress of asking simple, logical questions and instead being disrespectfully shuffled off the metaphorical stage by a panel that is hostile to open inquiry.

And that he was disrespectful...

I'm really surprised this student was suspended for an entire year for this incident. He was certainly being disrespectful and rude to the speaker, and deserved some sort of discipline, but a one-year suspension was an incredible over-reaction.

Man gets a greater punishment for proving a woman wrong than a woman gets for false rape accusations. Hopefully he will win a big enough lawsuit to retire and pursue whatever he dreams of. And hopefully everyone that worked against him gets to experience some actual discrimination in their life so they could get some perspective. Hopefully enough discrimination that they are forever kept out of any positions of power.

There's some very interesting things in that woman's speech. Her opposition to microaggressions are often, surprise, microaggressions.

She's an idiot and weak. That's not a microaggression but stating things as they are. People afraid to "hurt" others with words are themselves part of the problem as well as people that would so easily claim injury from words.

She doesn't seem to understand the concept of people putting their feelings above all else as being wrong.

She brings up the example of "going Dutch" and a Dutch guy being offended. She conforms to that offence but that offence is actually a microaggression!

Part of this problem is girls don't learn to cuss and swear or slag off. You have people like this who probably simply aren't good at it so consider it off limits and want to apply that to everyone else.

Her response to the Dutch guy whining about a saying should have been "I thought my clitoris was sensitive until I met you." and then to talk about Dutch ovens. No wonder she needs a prolonged study of linguistic syntax, she sucks at it. Instead of standing her ground against the Dutch guy's microaggression she bends over backwards to oblige and then makes a whole song and dance, a lecture about how she was bad.

Hint, some Dutch guy telling you off and acting all righteous or offended doesn't mean you did something wrong. You tell them to get screwed, you're an adult and that they should stop acting like a child.

Throughout all her syntactic studies she hasn't learnt the simple phrase "Don't tell me what to do."

"They refer to intelligence, often with African Americans."

She's not helping with that.

I mean she's doing syntax? "You don't act like a gay person."

The issue isn't invalidation of her sexuality it's that despite all her syntax she can't validate herself. For example, all she need to is ask "What acts define gay people?" As in fundamentally, for example, scoffing pussy in her case. When someone reaches the right definition she simple has to say "I do that." It's not hard.

She's saying a microaggression is "You're so sensitive, I can't say anything around you." That's not a microaggression it's legitimate feedback. It's essential constructive criticism. She's repressive and unpleasant to be around.

She also says that you should say when someone is insulted about how sorry you are and you didn't intend to like it's bumping into someone when in reality it's more like bumping into the air. She automatically presumes guilt. She does not stand her ground and consider that the proclaimed victim is wrong. Bullies often feign victimhood to frame their actions as justified.

My recommendation for treatment of her severe behavioural deficit is for her peers to to go to lengths to find offence in absolutely anything she does or say to give her a lesson in empathy or a taste of her own medicine. Shunning her as such would be an effective way to either correct her behaviour or drive her away.

So that's what they mean by "microaggression". Insults ... aggressive, ok. Deliberately linking the recipient to a negative stereotype ... aggressive, ok. But unthinkingly linking to a negative stereotype? That's not aggressive, that's ignorant. She gave the example of her unthinkingly using "going Dutch" to a Dutch colleague , who then told her he was offended. This is not any sort of "aggression", unless she knew both that he was Dutch, and also that he would see it as a slur. Whether or not it's aggressive depends on the knowledge each participant has about the other's state of mind. It could even be that the Dutch guy was being aggressive, if he knew she was just using a common saying, knew that she didn't think about him being Dutch, but exploited her ignorance to make her feel guilty and give himself victim points.

It's revealing that she glosses over this distinction.
