A LearnVest survey in 2013 found that a majority of men, and an even larger majority of women, thought the man should pay on a first date. Last November, after surveying some 17,000 heterosexual unmarried individuals from ages 18 to 65, Janet Lever of California State University, Los Angeles, and two colleagues reported that men typically still pay for most of a couple’s expenses, even after they’ve been dating for a while. In fact, more than two-fifths of women — with no difference in response by income level — say they’re bothered if men expect them to help pay.

And they will expect men to pay for the duration of the relationship, and if they marry, possibly for the rest of their lives.

This is why MGTOW is a thing, this is why men in all walks of life are avoiding relationships with women and doing hookups or nothing.

And it's just going to get worse.

I've worked in a bar for years and spent a lot of time thinking about dating and romance.

One of the worst things a man could do on a date is to pay as if they are paying for her time. Guys who pay for drinks and dinner are losers in the dating game. If men could see how much they are putting up barriers between them and their goals they would get angry at how misinformed they had been.

If you find yourself paying for the date you should at the same time delete the girl's contact details.

I assume you mean start paying the bills.

Edit: I misread who is to do what, I mean women will have to start paying the bills, not men. I think the onus is on women, not men. If men just stop paying the bills, women still have no requirement to take up the slack.

Unfortunately, equality can never exist. Why? Because biology has men and women as very different from each other. Now should women be treated poorly? No. But they will never be equal to men.

This strikes me as a relatively small problem. Think about it this way: if you are an attractive woman, men will pursue you. Give in too much, and you will come across as a slut. You need ways to make sure the guy is serious. Paying at least for the first date is one way he can signal that.

So straight guys who refuse to do so are doing themselves no favours. Their intent may be justified and they may be great guys. But that is not the way they will come across most of the time. Just like a law graduate from, what, the University of Kentucky may be brilliant - but will have to work much harder than one from Harvard to gain any credibility.

What I, as a gay man watching the whole scene from a comfortable distance, would recommend would be to pay for the first date, but to watch out. If she does not at least pay for drinks after that, or offers to pay for the next date (at least if she has a comfortable income comparable to yours), then take the signal she is sending seriously - and look elsewhere if you are looking for a relationship with some degree of equality.

Or better yet: many of the straight relationships I know that work out well do not start with formal dates - and the expectations and gender roles that come with them - at all. Work, dance clubs, or simply walking in the park with a cute puppy can work wonders in comparison.
