Standing at 5’5” and weighing barely 130 lbs — “Just say size eight,” she tells me during fact-checking — Professor Rachel Fulton Brown doesn’t look like the dangerous woman her critics describe. But she has become used to reading outlandish descriptions of herself since June 2015, when she published a blog post titled “Three Cheers For White Men,” effectively dropping a barrel of gunpowder into a burgeoning internecine war within Medieval Studies. Three years and hundreds of blog posts later, the tenured University of Chicago history professor is being casually referred to as a “fascist” at medievalist conferences, accused of inciting physical violence and rape against her peers, and avoided like a strumpet with bubonic plague. She has even been called out for bad language by Mark Zuckerberg’s sister Donna.

Wow, she's still at the University.

Fulton Brown was taken to task for refusing to acknowledge the problematic “whiteness” of her field and her responsibility as a Medieval Studies professor to “do something about it.”

Is this where one traditionally yell, burn the witch?

And I am pretty sure that if you threw me in a swimming pool, I would float.

If I remember right, that means she is a witch!

OK, it's a long story of heresy and a (hopefully) failed witch burning (I've not finished it yet). It's worth a read from what I've seen so far.

I'm glad they over-used / over-satured the internet with the word "fascist".

It was because of them that I was interested in learning more and started hanging out at /r/debatefascism , fascists are actually pretty reasonable and intelligent people. It's no surprise to me that communism and fascism are diametrically opposed to each other given that it is almost always communists that randomly throw out the "FASCIST" term as an attempted insult.....

Fascists didn't do 1/10th the damage that communists did btw. I am not a fascist [Obviously, I'm a classical liberal], but I have learned a lot about fascism and it is infinitely more reasonable than communism.

Ah, the PhD that was accused of ignoring the 'problematic whiteness' in a field that studies medieval European history, which is almost completely a history filled with various iterations of Germans, their politics, and their wars and movements.

What's next, we go to Japan and nail on Japanese Medieval Scholars for 'problematic yellowness' because the history they are studying is overwhelmingly filled with Japanese people and Japanese historical culture?

If you want to blow the fields of Medieval African history or Medieval North American history, or Medieval South American history wide open with some scholarship, by all means get to it, but don't pretend that taking 21st century identity politics and intersectionalist feminism and ramming it into a medieval European context isn't a total retcon of history.
