My husbands father came to visit today. I assumed that we would all be downstairs in our newly renovated play space so I planned downstairs tasks to do during the visit.
When his father came to visit and our son asked to go play downstairs he said no and that we were going to play in our living room. I also wanted to go downstairs and expressed that. I was upset and hurt that he still said no.
We spoke about it privately while changing the baby’s diaper and I apologized and said maybe I didn’t understand/had the wrong expectations and asked him to explain to me why we had to play in the living room. He wouldn’t explain his thinking and more tension was created between us. He wanted me to just listen without questioning and I just wanted to understand why he made the decision he did.
Am I in the wrong? Is it a form of disrespect to ask “why” when my husband decides something?
He is really irritated by it but I just genuinely want to understand his thinking so that I can have the right expectations for what will happen when his family members come to visit. Like maybe he never wants to play downstairs when they’re over and I just don’t know that yet?
Is it my fault for not asking how the day would play out beforehand? Is it his fault for not laying it out before the visit?
