My attorney advised me to file ASAP, even though I knew she was planning on doing it soon.

I am in TX. Yes, I had to pay the filing fees, but it also gave me a level of control on how things proceeded. Feel free to DM me for specifics.

I'm glad I took my attorney's advise, I'll just say that.

Many men here refuse to file for some reason. Most get screwed by the legal system and do not know why. What they do not understand is that a Divorce is a civil lawsuit against another party. Everyone thinks things are equal so if the wait for the other party to file it's all the same. IT IS NOT! The person who files is the one who controls the narrative and the other party (respondent) is always on the defensive. I don't get it. Many men (even here) sit back and watch the divorce "happen" even when it them who wanted it. Uf you want to divorce, FILE. Do not wait. FILE NOW! Beat her to the punch and control the narrative.

It doesn’t matter. The cost to file is minuscule compared to attorney bills. If both of you can’t split things up yourselves, and both go on blast and hire lawyers, the thousands you will waste are huge compared to the $600 it costs to file.

Normally I'd recommend filing first. You'll have your pick of all the best local lawyers, and after you consult with them, your spouse can't use them. (Some people will even go around and consult with all of them for this reason.)

Also, if she files first, you will have about 30 days to respond. If you already have a lawyer this might be no big deal, but when you don't, you can find yourself running around in a panic trying to find one (like I did). When you file first, you can take your time and you're more in control of the situation.

As for the cost, I'm not sure what you mean. The cost to file is pretty insignificant compared to what you'll be spending on everything else. And since you're still married, you can charge it to a joint account.

Depends on a bunch of factors, which a lawyer is best to help you with.

But I will say that it takes time, so if you want to speed things along getting in line can't hurt. Worst case you can always hop out.
