To expand on the other response, here's a decent summary of the problem. I don't have links to these studies, but I've seen them posted before, so hopefully someone else can respond and link them.

It's been shown before that women have an in-group bias, meaning that they show bias toward their own kind, other women. But on the flip side, men have an out-group bias, meaning that they show bias toward not their own kind, so...also women.

This makes sense if you think about our species' origins and biology. Any woman can only carry one child at a time, but any man can impregnate any number of women. So take a tribe of 100 men and 100 women. At any point in time, there can be up to 100 babies being grown. Say a disaster happens which kills 99 people. If all 99 people killed are men, you end up with 1 man and 100 women. You can still have up to 100 babies being grown at any point in time. But on the flip side, if all 99 people killed are women, you end up with 1 woman and 100 men. And in this situation, you can suddenly only have 1 baby being grown at a time. So based on this, you can see why our species originally had to prioritize women. It was fundamental to survival.

And that trend continues in modern day. It's in our coding at this point. Women want to protect other women, and men want to protect women. This shows up as described before, such that women have an in-group bias and men have an out-group bias.

In addition to this (and probably caused by this), it's been demonstrated that when men and women are treated equally, both men and women find it unfair to the women. And if treatment of women is increased some amount, both men and women view it as equal treatment, despite women being treated noticeably better.

All of these things are why we can simultaneously live in a society where men are discriminated against in many ways, yet if you ask any person on the street, they will be convinced that we live in a very misogynistic society. The red pill analogy is mainly about that. If you are any random person, odds are you believe that we live in a misogynistic society, and that women are lacking rights, and that they need help to be brought up to the point of equality with men. Taking the red pill and seeing things for how they actually are means noticing that in many ways, women have already caught up to men, and in many cases, have surpassed men. Yet society continues to think they are victims of discrimination.

I know this comment is already very long, but here's a snippet more. Someone has pointed this out recently by compiling a list of studies. But it's very common for people to think that women are discriminated against in some area, do research to come up with precise numbers, and in the process, realize that men are actually discriminated against in that area. For two notable occurrences...Some female Google employees sued Google, saying that they were being underpaid. Google looked into it, and determined that they were underpaying men. And more recently, the US Women's national soccer team thought they were being underpaid. And as with Google, the numbers revealed that the men's team is actually being underpaid. This ties into the thing I said above, about how when men and women are treated equally, most people view it as unfair for the women, despite being equal. This often results in situations where women are being paid, say, 10% more than men, yet they still feel discriminated against until the raw numbers prove them wrong.
