So now the range for women on boards is 40%-100% and the range for men in boards is 0%-60%. Yeah all those numbers are equal to one another.

European Union negotiators are expected to give final approval to the bloc's first-ever quota for the proportion of women on corporate boards, a lawmaker said on Tuesday, in a bid to boost representation and improve gender equality.The draft law would oblige listed companies in all 27 EU member countries to have women take up at least 40% of non-executive board seats, or that women occupy 33% of executive and non-executive roles combined.

She said the parliament was pushing for 2025 as the target date for achieving the board quotas, compared to 2027 in an earlier proposal. The sanction for failing to deliver was still under discussion, she said, with "naming and shaming" the laggards a potential compromise.

Just last month a similar quota (though infinitely less discriminatory) in Cali was ruled unconstitutional. Maybe Court of Justice of the EU can do the same for this quota too, though I don't have much hope.

In the UK, mandatory quotas were opposed by the then coalition Conservative-Liberal Democrat government, which preferred a voluntary approach led by Lord Mervyn Davies. That helped the UK become one of the best performers in Europe, with 39.1% of women sitting on FTSE100 boards by 2022, putting the UK second only to France in one international survey.

I don't know the details but on the surface, what UK is doing sounds infinitely more smarter than what EU has done.

Because employing based on gender is so progressive. Women should have the same opportunities yes, but they shouldn’t be handed to them. They need to prove themselves just like anyone else.

California USA has a law that fines any company not complying to the 40%

While there is no penalty for missing the target, companies that do achieve it will win public praise.
