They sent out mock applications, one per company, to openings across Germany, Netherlands, Norway, Spain, UK, US for:

(ISCO codes in parentheses): Cook (512), payroll clerk (2411, 3313, 411, 412), receptionist (422), sales representative (3322), software developer (252), and store assistant (522).

They note:

Many occupations are likely to comprise different sex-typed jobs, and the occupations included here vary in their gender profiles.[7] Supplementary Table S1 provides an overview of the gender distribution in each country within each occupational category based on national statistics the year before the field experiment took place (Lancee et al., 2019b). We note that receptionists and payroll clerks are female dominated, in particular in Netherlands, Norway, and the United States, whereas software developers are clearly male dominated in all countries

Based on what I see, the biggest discrimination against male applicants seems to be for already female-dominated jobs (payroll clerk, receptionist, sales rep). The discrimination against males in the male-dominated fields might be attributable to trying to get more women into male-dominated fields.

If anything, the study hints that the same things happening to women in male-dominated industries are also probably happening to men in female-dominated industries. It’s not entirely from a lack of male interest/applicants or exclusively men’s fault as feminists would lead us to believe. We need comparable amounts of energy/resources being devoted to getting women into STEM jobs ALSO being devoted to getting more men into female-dominated HEAL jobs (health, education, administration, literacy) (includes clerk and receptionist, 2 of the female-dominated jobs mentioned in this study). This requires us to stop pretending that men are somehow exempt from gender discrimination, or using past gender discrimination against women as an excuse to justify, or be apathetic towards, present gender discrimination against men.

One caveat to keep in mind is some companies will interview women and minority applicants just to demonstrate that they are looking for “diverse” candidates. So rates in call backs don’t tell the full story of hiring discrimination. Also it is plausible for women to have advantages in hiring but have disadvantages in promotions.

Also these sample sizes were uncomfortably small (I’m trained in statistical causal inference).

Although I’m very sympathetic to the lack of rigor/reason in the conversation about gender, we should always hold up a culture of healthy and symmetrical (along apriori political leaning) skepticism.

All that said, I wouldn’t be surprised if gender discrimination is increasingly entirely driven by the whether or not the applicant’s identity matches the dominant identity of the industry or firm.
