Marked as NSFW for discussion of actions and accusations that may be sensitive in nature. If you are affected or disturbed by such, I would avoid this post or scroll down to the TL;DR - also if you don't have time to read because this is a long story. But I think I need to get it out there after almost 4 years.
A few years ago, I lived in an apartment in college with 2 other girls - one in particular who I will refer to as B. Things started out alright, but quickly went downhill when B revealed their true colors. They ended up being a functional alcoholic, never cleaned, hardly showered, and basically ran around thinking the world should bend to her (borderline delusional on some counts).
I also had a good friend (male) who we'll call A. A met my roommate B after a particularly hard breakup with his fiance, and then started dating B when she was still decently tolerable to others. I warned A to not date her based on how she acted around me and our apartment, but he ignored it. Then, after several months of them dating, A broke it off with B over the summer because she had spiraled even further down and he was basically experiencing what I had. Once I came back to school and moved back in to the apartment, B started acting weirder and weirder. She knew I was friends with A well before they met, and we came to an agreement that A wouldn't come to the apartment. B soon started seeing the college counselor (female) to "talk through some things" - I was always weirded out by the counselor but figured if it would help her then all the better. Soon B started saying some odd advice the counselor had given her - such as, it was OK to maintain her drinking habits because "it helped her cope" (for reference she used to more than fill one of those blue recycling crates every week with bottles, and would often hide the empties under her bed so people didn't see them. She also once polished off 2 mostly full fifths of vodka and JD in around 36-40 hours) Then B started saying how she had been talking to the counselor about A breaking up with her, and now she was saying that A was "too rough" when before she always said how much she loved him (for reference A was a linebacker so he was big, and occasionally he might forget his own strength and end up giving a little too tight of a hug or grab someone's hand a little tight, but he always apologized and it was always an accident). I questioned her on this, but she brushed me off. As time went on and she saw this counselor more, her story kept changing - A was "verbally anusive", then "emotionally abusive", then "physically abusive", and then one day she came back from a session and declared: "A raped me" I sat down and talked with her for a little while because: 1) That's a very serious accusation, 2) I was still friends with the guy, and 3) I had been at the apartment over 90% of the time A had been there and had never seen/heard anything bad happen, nor had B ever told me anything. After discussions, this was why the counselor told B she had been raped: - A did not ask her consent every time he touched her. There were times she would fall asleep/pass out in a chair or at the table and A would help move her to her bed/the couch so she wouldn't fall over and hurt herself - A had once loosened the snaps on the back of her bra over the clothes because she fell asleep with it on so her back wouldn't be killing her the next day - B had been having bad dreams and with leading questions from the counselor determined her bad dreams featured A doing acts of rape and other actions to her - The alcoholism A had well before meeting B and that the counselor previously called "a good coping mechanism" was now a "symptom" With these details, I suggested to A that it sounded like the counselor was leading her on and that it might be best if she found another counselor, and reminded her of how serious a rape accusation is and to not say it unless she was sure. Her response? Anger at me for "not just believing her" and claiming I was "in league" with A since we were friends (also implying I was having sex with A, which everyone knew was false) From there things just got worse - I learned the counselor was in fact coaching B because she had been dying for a case like this to prove "rape culture" existed on the campus and give her power, fame, etc (also it turned out that she really wasn't a fan of straight white men in general). B had also managed to convince over 2/3 of our friends that her story was correct and that I was just lying. B then told the counselor about me and was coached by the counselor that the reason I wasn't backing her up was obviously because A had raped me too but I was either too scared to admit it or I had created some kind of sick relationship/love with A as a result, and B spread this around. As a last appeal to her remaining sanity, I begged B to be very careful what she said because such accusations can get people kicked out of college or even thrown in jail. Her response? She turned to me with what I can only describe as an evil, sadistic grin and asked, "Do you really think so?" B then instructed her friends to follow me and A and let her know what we were doing and if we ever met up. Cars followed us both, parking outside the apartment and his dorm. It came to physical violence more than once for both of us when she had her guy friends try and white knight for her. A would get calls from those people warning him of hanging out with me and hinting they knew exactly where we were. Once, when A and I went to a gas station to get a soda, B and her friends/protectors got so angry and waited me out at the apartment that I had to spend multiple days basically living out of my vehicle for fear of serious violence. It all came to a huge head though when A told me that he had been suspended from the football team because the coach and players had heard about B's lies. A relied on a football scholarship, so he had to drop out of school and go back home, to which B rejoiced by stealing some of his things and burning them in the backyard (nearly setting fire to the whole neighborhood). I, however, was still there in the apartment due to a year-long unbreakable lease. So, B continued to take our her frustrations on me. It ranged from little things like her intentionally being messier and stealing food, to worse things Iike being shot with a BB pistol, being pushed out of a window (thankfully we were on the first floor) due to sitting on the same couch as one of her guy friends, and numerous attempts to drug my food or spike my drinks so I would pass out and one or more of her guy friends could sexually abuse me as revenge (thankfully she was terrible at it and I caught her every time, then moved all my food and drinks into my locked bedroom). Not gonna lie, this time was tough. It continued until March 2020 when the world shut down. For me, it was a relief. I could move home and be away from this, and by August my lease was up and I could finish my last semester out living in the laundry room of a family member.
So, I've moved on. Graduated, gotten a job, saving for the American dream of a house, white picket fence, dog, 2.5 kids, the works. A has moved now to a good job and is engaged. After what happened, we mutually agreed to just go our own ways and not keep being friends. B is also engaged and now holds a job at the very same university for creative writing. However, I can't help but feel guilty, like I should have done something more. The faculty at that school was rotten to the core - everyone up to the president of the university had bought into the message of MeToo and feminism hook, line, and sinker. The counselor still works there, but who would I report them to, and how well would a years-old second hand conversation hold up? I just hate what happened, but even more I hate the fact that it is probably still happening at not only that university, but schools everywhere. Maybe one day I'll stop feeling guilty and mad. Maybe one day things will change. Maybe one day we'll live in a society I can be proud of.
TL;DR: Roommate (F) dated my friend (M) in college, he broke up with her. She proceeded to, while being coached by the college counselor, spread lies that he abused and raped her. When I took his side, she spread lies about me too and had her friends/supporters terrorize us until my friend left/was forced to leave school. She then tried to terrorize me until my lease was up. I feel guilty because the same people are there perpetuating the same lies and she never got in trouble, but I don't know what I can do to fix it.
