Boko haram burnt down schools along with all the students for years, nobody cared as all those students were boys. But kidnapping 150 schoolgirls draws international outrage and literal military response from UK and US.

Boko Haram's mistake was not burning thousands of boys alive but going after the protected class.

I have two possible theories to my question in the original post:

They only started reporting the gender of male kidnap victims after the attention from Chibok on the girls. On chronologies, this event is generally mentioned but no mass gender based kidnappings prior. I suspect they were occurring to supply the Boko Haram armed forces with child soldiers but either these didn't make the press or were not recorded in the Boko Haram chronologies. My research did not examine this as a theory.
That there is a public interest in male abductees but for different reasons to female abductees. Female abductees are reported to mobilise security efforts due to their vulnerabilities. Male abductees are reported to mobilise security concern because of the threat they will pose as future fighters. I don't believe there is a concern for their personal wellbeing as there is with female abductees. Dead males which are reported as gendered victims are a threat to the female vulnerability narrative, so they call dead males civilians, students, and other non-gendered terms. Male abductees are a future threat so they need to be identified as potential predators that make communities unsafe. This theory reflects male disposability theory. I'll post my journal article once it is published (hopefully in a few weeks).

I'm interested in people's thoughts about these theories.

Boko Haram burned those boys alive to give the message. It didn't put a dent in civilized people's heart. Then after 3 months this time they only kidnapped girls and there were international protest by men and women. Even a terrorist group had to improvise to give their message to the gynocentric humanity of the civilized society.

Nigeria is an actual patriarchy. We do see women as delicate and that they need to be protected so your always more likely to see news when women are harmed as opposed to men take for example the chibok girls. It was all over the news, they’ve done memorials and whatnot. That happened when I was like 13 it wasn’t until 2020 that I learned how bad boko haram was for men
