I think he brings up a ton of valid points, but it's perplexing how he starts out by being derisive that these problems are "white imperialism" on the basis that non-white people are fully-actualized humans and that ascribing all the world's problems to white people is noble saviage thinking...and that actually, it's patriarchy.

Like which is it? Is heaping all of society's problems onto one group a subtle de-legitimization of the other groups' personhood, or is it all the fault of men?

Again, credit where it's due for articulating that "most power resides in the hands of men" is miles different from "all men possess power", but it's a weird take that a situation where that's a valuable distinction is still "patriarchy" but not "white imperialism". If "white imperialsm" denies the agency of non-white people in shaping society, then surely "patriarchy" does the same for women.

I don't deny that a system where most of those who overtly hold power are male can be described as patrarchal, but I question whether that term is really comprehensive or accurately descriptive when maleness is such an insufficient criterion for holding power.

I am an immigrant living in Thailand. The government here, including the comparatively powerful hereditary monarch, are pretty much entirely ethnically Thai. But it would be wild to call this culture a "Thaiarchy" or pretend that I'm not in an egregious state of social privilege relative to the Thai laborers bussed in from the outskirts of the city to build condos with mind-blowingly inadequate PPE. Being Thai is a necessary but utterly insufficient prerequisite for holding civic power here. Thai-ness is not a useful lens for distinguishing the powerful from the powerless in this society, and it would therefore be meaningless to name the power structure after that specific attribute.

Edit: I wrote this before watching the whole video. I feel like if this had been better structured I'd have known his understanding of Patriarchy earlier snd it would recontextualise what he's saying better. In other words, he uses the term Patriarchy sort-of properly (unlike many FeministsI know who use it to mean "male dominated") but he does slip in and out of that definition imho.

Good messaging. However, I don't agree with his perception of Patriarchy as existing to control people to keep them subjugated to mens power. For example, when he talks about how he thinks women being more afraid of men is because Patriarchy finds it easier to control them this way. He completely ignores Feminist and Feminism responsibility in how society (both men and women)... view men and women!

Early on he says that the family court system favours women as it seems them as better care givers, and this is Patriarchy. When in reality, men originally had custody of children because it was mens social role to protect the family (which is why he had access to the family finances and women couldn't open bank accounts).

It wasn't until the 1970's-80's when women/Feminists/activists turned this around and leaned into the biological essentialist arguements of "we are literally made for care-giving" that family courts swung their favour the other way.

How is that Patriarchy?

So I like the guy but he has blinkers on which will prevent him from seeing the entire picture.

miles ahead of the majority of discussion on mens issues for sure. Not perfect but it's actually pretty good, which is very rare.
