OK, so, interestingly enough, I am currently writing a book, part of the plot of which is, roughly, "how this system came about" (it is set about 5,000 years ago). I have been doing a lot of research, and this is the conclusion I have come to.

Loosely, human society seems to have developed through 3 different modes of normative social behavior:

-Nomadic hunter-gatherers, prior to exposure to civilization (i.e. the Sioux don't count), tended to have very loose family structures which were not necessarily connected to the sort of relations as we understand them today; the major problem was one of inbreeding, since family relations were not recognized in the same way, there is/was no incest taboo. There was also probably no notion of hetero- vs homosexual activity, it was just something different people did with different people, except possibly a taboo prohibiting heterosexual activity during certain times of year (so children won't be born in mid-winter).

-Early farmers were highly matriarchal, but managed to form communities of several thousand, almost all of which would have been women and children, some crippled or old men, but only a handful of the biggest, toughest men that the women shared. Boys would have been sent out at puberty in groups to "hunt" (or preferably die, from the point of view of the men of the village), and the toughest of those would come back and replace the older men, killing or crippling them. Again, family relations would have been different (lots of different mothers, but only a handful of fathers), but the incest taboo probably came into play in some fashion.

-Late hybrid settlers/nomads had domesticated horses, invented wagons, and if not invented bronze certainly spread it around. They had both settlements in river valleys and seasonal nomadic bands to trade, fight, or just explore, but most importantly, had discovered a way to maintain groups of lots of healthy adult males without them getting into fights over the women, which is almost assuredly the origin of monogamy. Probably serial monogamy, as their high protein diet and high technology meant that more boys lived to grow into men, and more women were now dying young in child-birth, so high status men would marry more than once. This would result in more men than women...

Arguably, we are entering a new mode, although monogamy, of whatever stripe, is still deeply ingrained.

The point is, though, that we got here because that's what worked best at some point in the past, and the only thing it means about the future is that, whatever happens, it has to follow from what has come before.

Men have the much stronger sex drive, while women have the stronger reproductive drive. Men can live pretty well without 'stuff'. But, we need 'stuff' to attract women, so we work, competing with other men to show who's got the 'right stuff'.

Women wait at the finishing line of male races, to do the choosing. And, in the subsequent relationship, the reins of power are held by the partly less desirous of sex. Our female mate will require more & more 'stuff', to convince her she's made the right choice. She may dispense a sexual reward in return. It's the basis of Briffault's Law, and it suits society, as it maintains the male in production mode.

This is the 'system' we speak of. It's run by women for their benefit. Men are 'stuffed'.

You can always tell the activists from the idiots with this logic.

If they are blaming men for the problems, they care more about blame than resolutions.

If they are discussing steps to get better, they care more about helping than who caused it.

It’s the same with posts about how feminism caused male issues. Blame does nothing. How do we solve mens issues? That’s what activism is.
