Unless you are impoverished, time is money, get a lawyer and make the divorce fast. There are horror stories about paying lawyers thousands, but you have control over that.

Deciding on whether or not to use a lawyer (and their staff such as paralegals) depends on a few things. But as general rule, if you can afford one, use one. As a hard and fast rule, if she's got one, you get one.

If money is an issue and you really need to make a tough decision about spending money on a lawyer or something else, then consider:

What's the value of the marital estate, how complicated is it (e.g. are you splitting pensions, IRAs, investment accounts, crypto, etc.), and how much are you willing to give up beyond 50/50?
Is there going to be a custody fight?
Is there going to be an alimony fight?
Are there going to be fights about key assets (e.g. family home)?
How much do you value your time?

If you're both going pro se, then I guess you can duke it out over all the issues. Similarly, if you can hammer out a good agreement on all issues, no lawyer required - BUT - sometimes people without lawyers agree to things the court can't allow (e.g. no child support), so it would pay to try to at least find a lawyer who is willing to review the agreement for legality (which they should be willing to do on a fixed fee or limited number of hours, provided they don't end up having to negotiate it).

RE: financial issues - your state should have mandatory financial disclosures which may make it less of an unearthing than you think initially
