I feel that if you don’t have a real reason to wear a suit (like a job requirement, or matching social class of your other friends), then you’ll just come off very weird and dressed unnecessary. However, if you wear it well and act very calm and natural like you don’t even know the suit is on, you might just pull it off like a boss.

The context matters. Wearing a suit to a coffee shop or a park or similar usually looks tacky. Wearing a suit to a classy lounge or restaurant can make sense. There are plenty of opportunities to do that in LA and NYC (and it's fairly common).

What also matters is how you wear the suit. If it's a half canvas suit with poor fabric quality, low quality shirt with placket, tie, etc, you're going to look like a desk jockey. Wearing a suit "business style" is mostly unattractive.

The right look is something like a dark Armani suit (fashion styling), shirt with one or two buttons open, luxurious fabrics, no placket, everything tailored properly, loafers preferable to oxfords, ideally no belt.

Note this guy is wearing a suit with peak lapels, which are loud and not considered casual. Notch lapels are better for a date imo. Notice also that this guy looks rather comfortable, whereas suits typically stiffen a man.

And yes, dressing this way will set you well ahead of the competition.

No I feel that's a little too tryhard unless the setting is right like if you're wearing it to a formal event or something. Why not wear something more semiformal like a dress shirt and jeans with boots?
