Since I've swallowed the pill, I've had an issue with working on one of my main hobbies, which is playing guitar.

I'm now good enough that I can pretty easily learn any song that's not written by someone known for their raw technical prowess (Steve Vai or Joe Satriani type of players. These songs may not be the best examples)

My issue is that when I play for other people, since they usually aren't musicians, they have no idea whether or not I'm actually any good. I often times get a similar response of "Wow, that's cool" that every kid who owns a guitar, can play 4 chords and sort of sing along with it gets.

I'm not sure what kind of response I expect, but considering an increase in skill at my level of playing is starting to become a very subtle difference, I don't think any normal person can really see a difference.

It's similar to a body builder telling someone who doesn't lift their max. If they say it's 500 lbs. vs. 525 lbs. most people will think of them the same way, because to most people lifting that much weight is in the realm of impossibility anyways.

So my question is, is there any point in improving yourself at a skill beyond a reasonably marketable value? It seems like it may be better start learning a new skill, like singing that may be more appreciated anyways, considering I'm not intending to make a career out of guitar. Hopefully someone can give me some good insight on this.

Tl;dr - Once you get good enough at something that people can't tell the difference when you improve, is there a point in improving any more
