Your goal is not to compliment but to either get their contacts or go to different location (instadate). You don't actually need to compliment unless there is actually something to compliment her on and would feel natural to say during the conversation. Your only issues would be transitioning from asking directions to an actual open ended conversation. Most guys over-depend on using compliments. Sure you can use that to do the transition, but you can actually just change subjects. If she looks uncomfortable, that means she's just not interested and you should leave. The key here is being able to vibe and read her body language.

An easier way to do this is to first practice saying hi while passing by and once you're comfortable doing that you say hi + give a compliment while passing by.

And if you still can't do this, well, you will have to force yourself because it means there is a massive block right there.

And whether you tackle that block with this specific exercise or another, it will still be the same "hard".

Honestly, I still have problems doing hit and runs even when I get good reactions most of the time from doing them. What helped me is to have a way to punish myself if I don't do it, so I'm basically trying to use fear (punishment) as a motivator to counteract the immediate fear (approaching).

My punishment is if I don't complete my goal for the day, then I have to go home and do four rounds of HIIT workouts, which can take me like an hour. So when I have that in my mind, I'm thinking, fuck it, I don't want to give up an hour of my time and workout when I can just be uncomfortable for a little while and walk away. It helps, but sometimes I still give in to the fear of approaching.
