Instead of taking a single photo. Take a burst. Out of 15-20 there should be 1 or 2 that look normal

If you look good IRL, there is no reason your photos can't look good either. In photography, lighting is key. When it comes to poses, it's about looking natural. Focus on getting candid, moving shots, not posed stiff shots. Find good lighting and have the person taking photos of you take multiple as you move around. One of them will turn out well.

Could be the camera on your phone. If you don’t already have it, download Snapchat. Sure they have a lot of silly filters but it also has a really good camera that makes you look flattering especially when you change the lighting. Also some people are just naturally photogenic but a lot of people are using filters. So don’t compare yourself to others most of the beautiful pictures are Photoshop and filters

I'm also unphotogenic. Although to be fair, nobody ever says "I'm taking the photo now" so they usually get me mid sentence or while I'm moving. I don't pose properly or in time so I look weird and big, and not in a good way but like an old man's nose.

Just practice. Get a cheap ring stand or a friend (female) and find a cool spot to take photos. Most women take really good photos of themselves.

Or consult a professional photographer.

When you get a picture taken, you should do some kind of pose so you look relaxed. The “ had to do it to ‘em” pose is a go to.

Me too. If you've ever seen that episode of Friends where they are taking pictures for their engagement announcement, that is so me. My smile is so weird. In candids I look fine though.

For dating profiles, maybe try candids. Have your family and friends take pics of you doing fun things and tell them that's it's going to be for a dating app, so they know what to focus on.
