It's a little rough when you've got your eye on someone who's in the service industry and it's their job to serve you as a customer. They are a captive audience, and it's not exactly a fair field. It leads to all kinds of mixed signals.

It's best to avoid these situations, but as a former bartender/waitress addict, I can't talk ... but I will.

The 101 thing makes perfect sense in these situations. You really shouldn't be hitting on a captive audience. This is your chance to let her know that. Tell her, yes, you are indeed interested in her favourite apple pie, as well as the weather (who isn't?), but you don't feel comfortable bothering her at work. Then get her number. Works like a charm.

The captive audience thing may seem easy at first (that's because it is) but when you acknowledge that it's a captive audience and you'd feel more comfortable in a more even playing ground? Girls understandably love that.

Here's what you can do, now.

Go back to the same store. Buy a snickers and make sure you go through her register. Start small talk. Tease her, see how she responds. At the end of it, you should have reached the hook point and she'll want to give you her number. Say that you don't know if you'll be back to this store soon but you want to get to know her more, and discover her secret apple pie recipe or some other callback humor.

Text her the next day with an "it was nice to meet you" and roll from there.
