I once got a phone number for telling a girl thank you when she told me she had a boyfriend. She was shocked, and thought I was joking because apparently most other guys she told this to would get angry/upset/annoyed. I told her I wasn't there to ruin a good thing, and asked if she had any cool single friends with her. After a bit, one of her friends came to us and, she introduced me and DHVed me a couple times. Pretty awesome. Her friend never called me back though. Ahh well!

haha this sounds so ridiculous reading it, but it's actually something that should be done often. i do it as well, and you walk away with much more esteem thank having your tail between your legs. also the look on their faces when they wonder why you thanked them is priceless.

Not only does it make someone else's day a little less crappy, it keeps you in a positive frame of mind, perfect for your next approach. And who knows, you might even make a friend out of it.

Also, rejecting someone is hard. I can imagine it being stressful saying no to all these boring guys who come up, deliver lame one-liners, and then get pissed when they get shut down, taking it out on her.

Responding positively is usually always a good idea.

I don't like "thank you", it makes it sound like the interaction was just for practice or something. Say, "enjoy your night" or something relevant.
