I've always been of the mindset that being forward and honest with your intention is the way forward. This works very well when you partner it with a willingness to walk away and find other options. Here's a perfect example from a text interaction I was having with a girl this evening. When I suggested we meet, she said the dreaded "only if it's just as friends" line.
